About the Artwork +
While originating in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, Taarkashi, meaning "wire work," is a distinctive Indian art form and a notable heritage of Rajasthan. It involves precisely embedding thin metal wires (brass, copper, or silver) into wood, often seen in the intricate floral and geometric patterns adorning old palace doors, sometimes alongside ivory inlays. This exquisite Tarkashi artwork by Gaurav Shakya is a splendid tribute to the divine quartet of Hindu mythology — Lord Ram, Goddess Sita, Lord Lakshman, and the ever-devoted Hanumanji. The composition is brought to life using the ancient technique of brass wire inlay, a hallmark of the Tarkashi tradition. At the heart of the piece stands Lord Ram, the embodiment of virtue and dharma, holding his iconic bow while adorned with delicate garlands, a resplendent crown, and intricately detailed attire. Beside him stands Goddess Sita, radiating grace and devotion, her form adorned with elegant jewelry and flowing garments that echo the purity of her character. To Ram’s other side is Lakshman, his loyal brother and steadfast protector, carrying a quiver of arrows and exuding quiet strength and reverence. At their feet, in a humble pose of devotion, kneels Hanumanji — the epitome of unwavering bhakti, holding his gada (mace) and bowing in adoration. The scene is framed by a masterfully crafted border of symmetrical leafy vine motifs in gleaming brass, which adds to the grandeur of this sacred tableau. The natural dark wood grain of the Sheesham background provides a rich, warm contrast to the shimmering brass lines, making the figures appear almost ethereal. Gaurav Shakya’s work here not only captures the artistic beauty of Tarkashi but also the profound spiritual symbolism of the Ramayana, making this piece a treasured heirloom for any home or sacred space.
