This intricate sculpture is a captivating example of a Gomira Mask from West Bengal, India, crafted by the artist Kalyan Sarkar, a form deeply rooted in the performance of the Gomira dance used to ward off evil and ensure good harvests. The piece features a large, stylized mask-like face at the base, characterized by wide, intense eyes and a toothy smile, embodying a powerful, protective deity or spirit central to the Gomira tradition. Above the mask, the sculpture is tiered, with several levels of intricate bas-relief carvings illustrating key heroic scenes from the Ramayana: the bottom layer depicts Rama and Lakshmana standing ready with their bows; the middle layer features Rama with his bow and Hanuman holding his mace, symbolizing their powerful alliance; and the top layer shows the dramatic scene of the vulture king Jatayu fighting to save Sita as she is being abducted by Ravana. This entire carving masterfully fuses a ceremonial art form with specific mythological storytelling, creating a powerful visual narrative and a sacred object of protection and devotion.
