Sita Swayamvar in Kalamkari by Ghanshyam Sarode

This elaborate Srikalahasti Kalamkari textile by Ghanshyam Sarode masterfully illustrates the journey of Lord Rama and Lakshmana as they fulfill their duty as protectors of dharma, culminating in the divine union of the Sita Swayamvar. Hand-painted using a traditional kalam and natural dyes, the artwork utilizes a narrative grid to weave together the legendary events of the Bala Kanda.

The top register chronicles the brothers’ apprenticeship under the sage Vishwamitra. In the top left, the narrative begins with Rama’s first major victory: the slaying of the demoness Tataka, an act that establishes his role as a celestial guardian. The top right panel depicts the successful completion of the yagna (sacred ritual); while Vishwamitra and the sages perform the rites over the holy fire, Rama and Lakshmana stand as vigilant sentinels. The scene captures the pivotal battle where the demons Maricha and Subahu attempt to disrupt the ritual, only to be defeated by Rama’s powerful arrows, ensuring the spiritual ceremony concludes without disturbance.

The central, largest panel serves as the climax of this journey—the Sita Swayamvar in Mithila. Within this sacred architectural arch, Lord Rama is depicted having successfully broken the mighty Shiva Dhanush, while Sita stands poised to offer him the varamala (nuptial garland). Sage Vishwamitra and King Janaka stand as central witnesses to this fated union. Flanking this central shrine are vignettes of domestic and courtly life, featuring women engaged in preparation and ritual, their forms rendered with the rhythmic, fine linework characteristic of the Srikalahasti style.

The lower register presents a celebratory procession of courtiers, sages, and musicians, their varied postures creating a sense of dynamic movement across the canvas. Every figure is meticulously colored with a traditional palette of madder red, indigo blue, and earthy ochre, set against a natural cream background. Enclosed by an intricate floral border of alternating gold and grey leaves, this work by Ghanshyam Sarode is not merely a painting but a visual epic, celebrating the transition of Rama from a young prince to the divine consort of Sita.

Domestic Orders

All prices are inclusive of GST and applicable Indian taxes.

• We offer free shipping on orders above ₹1999 for all artworks, except Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri.
• A flat shipping rate of ₹499 applies to orders below ₹1999.

Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri

Shipping is charged on a per-kilogram basis, due to the delicate and bulky nature of these items.

International Orders

• A flat shipping charge of ₹4,000 applies to international artwork orders.
• Customs duties, taxes, or import charges in the buyer’s country are not included and must be borne by the buyer.
• Shipping rates for Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri artworks will be calculated based on weight.

Extra charges may be applicable for both domestic and international deliveries in the following cases:

• If the article requires additional packaging (such as a wooden crate) to ensure safe shipping due to its delicate nature.
• Custom-framed artworks.
• Artworks where shorter side exceeds 36 inches or Decor items with any side over 35 inches.
• If you request express shipping. Contact support to check availability.
• The order contains more than two different product types.

Ready To Ship/ In Stock artworks are shipped in under 2 weeks. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/ In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.
