About the Artwork +
This expansive, highly complex horizontal Kalamkari textile by Harinath N. presents a masterful, multi-figured visualization of the Srinivasa Kalyanam (the divine wedding of Lord Venkateswara, a form of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Padmavati). Serving as a magnificent piece of visual scripture, the layout utilizes a strict hierarchical architecture to map a crowded assembly of celestial and earthly witnesses around a central ritual fire.
The focal center of the upper register features the dark cerulean-blue skinned Lord Srinivasa standing in regal majesty, gently holding the hand of his consort, Goddess Padmavati, who is rendered in a warm, golden-yellow pigment. Lord Venkateswara is adorned with a towering, multi-tiered golden crown (mukut) filled with fine-line cross-hatching, heavy multi-stranded pearl garlands, and armlets defined by sharp black pen-strokes. Goddess Padmavati is draped in a magnificent crimson-red wedding sari patterned with a dense grid of fine dots and an elaborate gold-woven border. They stand directly over the holy fire altar (Homa Kundam) with their hands intertwined, which sends up stylized orange and black flames to consecrate their vows. They are flanked immediately by other gods and goddesses, royal priests chanting hymns, and female attendants holding auspicious platters, all dressed in intricately striped and dotted traditional vestments.
Beside Lord Venkateshwara, holding his shankha (conch) and chakra (discus) is Lord Shiva, with a tiger skin wrapped around his waist, holding a deer and damru in his upper hands, and the lower hands held in the abhaya mudra (gesture of protection and fearlessness) and varada mudra (gesture of blessings or boon-giving), his face adorned with a third eye and crescent moon.
Beside him stands Brahma, the four-faced creator deity, with his hands held in the abhaya and varada mudra. To his left is Garuda, depicted in green, the celestial eagle vahana of Vishnu, with his hands folded in the anjali mudra.
To the right, beside Goddess Padmavati, stand a row of goddesses and celestial women. Goddess Sarasvati, associated with knowledge, music and the arts, is shown holding a veena with a peacock handle.
The upper corners and celestial canopy expand the narrative into the heavens. Witnessing the union from a light-blue sky register are flying gandharvas who rain delicate flowers down upon the couple. The lower register functions as a rhythmic, horizontal courtly space, hosting a dense assembly of ten seated sages and divine musicians. These figures are captured playing traditional instruments, their robes a marvel of Srikalahasti detail featuring repeating diamond grids, floral scrolls and hand-hatched shawls.
The entire cosmic assembly is enclosed within an opulent, multi-layered border consisting of alternating rows of geometric rosettes and running floral vines, all bounded by a thick, solid maroon-red cloth edge.
