About the Artwork +
This spectacular, elongated Kalamkari panel by Harinath N presents a grand, multi-figured rendition of the Sri Rama Pattabhishekam (The Coronation of Lord Rama), serving as a definitive example of narrative epic documentation within the Srikalahasti tradition.
The composition is structured beneath a long, continuous courtly arch made of alternating gold and blue scalloped folds. Seated at the absolute center of the frame are the divine couple: the deep cerulean-blue skinned Lord Rama and his consort, Goddess Sita, rendered in a warm golden hue. Rama holds his right hand in a gesture of blessing - the abhaya mudra and his left wrapped around Sita. His face is turned forward in calm majesty under a magnificent imperial crown. Sita sits gracefully at his side, her form draped in an intricate red and white sari, with the right hand in the abhaya mudra and left resting on her lap.
Kneeling directly before their throne is a green-skinned Hanuman, the monkey-god, his hands clasped in absolute devotion. Jambavan, the bear- general of Rama's army, kneels down on the other side, holding a club in his hands.
Surrounding the central throne is a stately assembly of royal attendants, sages and brothers. Flanking Rama are his devoted brothers Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna, holding royal whisks and umbrellas in one hand and their bows and arrows in another, their garments detailed with complex cross-hatching, polka dots and floral borders. Sages like Vashistha and royal monkey warriors (vanaras) stand at the outer columns with hands raised in prayer. The entire courtly narrative is set against a rich, solid terracotta-pink background register and enclosed within a repeating circular frame.
The painting serves as the ultimate celebration of righteous rule and cosmic alignment. Through his masterful orchestration of the distinct personas and their detailed ceremonial robes within a singular elongated frame, Harinath N. demonstrates the incredible capacity of the Kalamkari style to capture extensive scriptural epics while maintaining an absolute visual balance.
