About the Artwork +
This narrative Phad painting by Abhishek Joshi depicts an episode from the Ramayana, where Lord Rama defeats Ravana and establoshes the victory of good over evil.
Phad painting is a folk art form from of Rajasthan, India. The word ‘Phad’ refers to a long painted cloth or a scroll, which narrates the story through a series of painted images. This narrative painting is carried by a Bhopa (a storyteller) who would sing and narrate the story depicted on the scroll. Traditionally, these Phad paintings were created to narrate the depiction of local folk deities and heroic figures of Rajasthan.
This Phad painting depicts the narration of a battlefield, where Lord Rama kills the demonic Ravana. Rama is shown in a kneeling position, extending his arms and in the act of releasing the arrow; he is dark-complexioned, with a bun tied high, heavily embellished and attired in a lower garment. The latter is shown in full action, with ten heads, reflecting his mastery of knowledge and arts, holding arms such as a sword, bow, and arrow. Alongside these two figures, a magnificent figure of Lord Vishnu is painted in the extreme left corner, signifying the form of Lord Rama, as his own personification, signifying the scene of Ravana's death, where he witnessed the presence of Lord Vishnu. Rendered in his characteristic blue complexion, his facial features include almond-shaped eyes, a long nose, fuller lips and a double chin. His head is adorned with a crown, a Vaishnava tilak, and heavy jewellery. His right hand holds his sudarshanchakra (discus), symbolising the cosmic order and wheel of time.
To the upper and lower side of the composition, a devanagari script is inscribed, describing the moment where Rama, highly enraged at Ravana, stretched his bow to its fullest extent. With complete focus and supreme preparation, he shot that arrow capable of tearing through the vital spots.
The backdrop is painted in maroon, marked with outlines of figures, narrating the various episodes of the Ramayana such as Lord Rama and Lord Lakshmana hunting the Golden Deer, Lord Hanuman lifting the Sanjeevani Mountain, and others. This elaborative narration is enclosed within a broad border painted in red.
