About the Artwork +

This exquisite Mata ni Pachedi painting by artist Vasant Manubhai Chitara captures the beauty of nature through striking contrasts. Rooted in the sacred traditions of Gujarat, this art form was originally created by the Vaghri community as a means of worship, now used as a backdrop for their Goddess. Today, it continues to reflect their deep spiritual and ecological worldview. In this remarkable composition, the artist presents a vivid contrast of two landscapes, a desert and a river, each brimming with life yet vastly different in character. On one side, the desert stretches out in warm reddish-brown sands. A majestic tree offers shade to a group of camels with decorative cloths on their backs. Two camels stride forward across the terrain, while a third, younger one rests on the ground, tired by the journey under the scorching sun. These camels are deeply symbolic, representing the Goddess Dashamaa or Momai Mata, a beloved deity of the Kutch region, who is often depicted with camels as her vahana. The camels symbolise her protective role over the land, agriculture, and livestock, and her spiritual ability to traverse the earthly realms. The desert is adorned with green and yellow cacti, enhancing its beauty. In contrast, the adjacent river scene flows with tranquility. Painted in smooth grey brushstrokes, the water is home to colorful fish adorned with intricate patterns. The riverbank is lined with shrubs and trees in hues of green, brown, and yellow, while birds glide gracefully across the blue sky beneath soft, floating clouds, adding movement and joy to the scene. Every element is meticulously detailed, from the dotted patterns on trees and sands, to the delicate motifs on birds, fish, and camel adornments. The painting becomes not just a celebration of nature, but a symbolic reflection of life itself. The desert and the river standing in as metaphors for joy and sorrow, stability and change, calm and chaos. With this portrayal, Sanjay Chitara honors the sacred artistic legacy of the Vaghri community, transforming traditional technique into a timeless narrative of nature’s contrasts and the ever-shifting balance of the human experience.

Vasant Manubhai Chitara

Vasant Manubhai Chitara
Vasant Manubhai Chitara, an eighth-generation artist from Vasana, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is celebrated for his mastery of Mata ni Pachedi, a traditional Gujarati art form. He began his artistic journey at age 10, learning from his father, who inherited the craft from his own grandfather. Despite a modest educational background, Vasant's unwavering passion for Mata ni Pachedi reflects a deep connection to his family's cherished tradition and a commitment to preserving Gujarat's rich cultural heritage through intricate artworks inspired by mythology and spirituality.

Mata Ni Pachedi

Mata ni Pachedi is a traditional folk art form from Gujarat, India, created by the nomadic Vaghari community, known for its vibrant depictions of Hindu goddesses, particularly the mother goddess, Mata. Literally translating to "behind the goddess," these artworks were traditionally used as backdrops in shrines, evolving from portable shrines created by the marginalized Vaghari community who were denied temple entry. Characterized by bold, dynamic compositions with the goddess at the center, surrounded by devotees and symbolic animals, the art uses an earthy palette of black, red, and white, symbolizing protection, strength, and purity, respectively. It is traditionally created on cotton cloth using natural dyes, with outlines drawn using a bamboo stick dipped in black dye made from jaggery and iron, and colors filled in from natural sources like turmeric and indigo. This labor-intensive process results in intricate designs and patterns, making Mata ni Pachedi a profound expression of devotion, a testament to the Vaghari community's resilience, and an important part of India's cultural heritage.
