About the Artwork +
This exceptionally powerful Mata ni Pachedi hanging by Dilip Chitara documents the complete local folklore of Vishat Mata, executing a rare and intense theological landscape through a strict, deliberate color scheme. The artwork is created using exclusively two pigments, deep indigo blue and stark black, over the raw, organic cream fabric base, an artistic constraint that intensifies the mysterious, sacred atmosphere of the battle scene.
The composition is aggressively dominated by the monumental, central form of the Mother Goddess, Vishat Mata, captured mid-combat against a terrifying, malicious demon. The artist has meticulously detailed her fierce manifestation, endowing her with two distinct, expressive faces, adorned with elegant garments and elaborate jewellery, and twenty radiating arms that fan out symmetrically like a cosmic wheel. Each individual hand grips a specific sacred weapon, including curved swords, daggers, spears and tridents, as she attempts to destroy the evil force. The narrative basis of this encounter stems from the plight of a village living in absolute terror under this demon, who routinely abducted and devoured small children from the community. In their desperation, the collective village gathered to offer sincere prayers to the Goddess to end the slaughter, prompting her to appear in this multi-armed, fierce form.
The lower register contains critical narrative elements that illustrate the limits of raw power. Despite her twenty arms and her deployment of the sacred power of the nine bells (Nav Ghan), the demon survived every divine strike. This struggle is highlighted by the goddess's unique vehicle (vaahana) depicted directly beneath her; rather than her traditional lion mount, the artist has rendered an extraordinary composite beast possessing a human female face paired with varied, strangely shaped animal legs that actively trample the lower registers. The demon remained alive until a small, humble bird appeared on the battlefield, requesting a single chance from the Goddess to defeat the monster. Though initially met with disbelief, the bird flew directly into the demon's nose and burst forcefully out through its forehead, instantly destroying the evil creature.
The background space is filled with tightly packed columns of miniature devotees, village elders, and celestial witnesses looking onward, all framed within a thick, cross-hatched geometric black border. Ultimately, this masterpiece functions as a profound ethical commentary on the nature of victory, using the flowing kalam contours of the Chitara lineage to teach that while immense power is sacred, intelligence and true humility, as embodied by the tiny bird, are essential to completely uproot entrenched evil.
