This Kalighat painting by Uttam Chitrakar offers a stylized and powerful portrayal of a group of tigers, showcasing the folk tradition's brilliant capacity for capturing wildlife with immense graphic energy. Developing near the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, West Bengal, this school of art is globally celebrated for its continuous, fluid brushstrokes and heavy, sweeping contours that suggest deep volume. In this work, the artist masterfully clusters multiple big cats into a tightly knit, singular sculptural unit, celebrating the collective power of these majestic animals.
At the center of the composition is a family of five stylized tigers huddled closely together, creating a beautiful layered overlapping pattern. The two largest, dominant tigers sit side-by-side in the foreground, their bodies positioned in profile while their heads are turned towards each other. Their coats feature a combination of yellow and bright orange base, densely detailed with parallel black stripes that trace the muscular swell of their necks and hindquarters. Their faces are anthropomorphized in the signature Kalighat style, boasting large, heavy-lidded almond eyes looking sideways, crisp muzzle markings and short, pointed ears standing alert. A long, elegant tail curves high into the upper right, terminating in a solid black tip that frames the group.
What makes this painting structurally remarkable is the intricate stippled texturing across the central bodies of the animals. The artist contrasts the bold stripes of the limbs and faces with a dense, fine mosaic of grey-and-white cross-hatched dots covering their midsections, mimicking a highly stylized, textured fur pattern. Nestled directly behind the dominant pair are three smaller tigers, their heads peeking up out of the huddle with identical, calm almond eyes.
The entire feline gathering is set against a flat blue background wash. This high-contrast background highlights the orange tones and bold black stripes of the tigers. Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
