This complex and beautifully balanced Kalamkari painting by Harinath N presents a highly symmetrical depiction of the Kalpavriksha narrative, placing an emphasis on the avian and mammalian guardians that protect the sacred wilderness.
The center of the composition is dominated by a sweeping, coral-like tree trunk that breaks into a dense, fan-shaped dome covering nearly the entire canvas. The canopy is a masterclass in narrative density, packed with thousands of interlocking green leaves and an array of exotic multi-petaled blossoms detailed in shades of soft yellow, indigo blue, and deep sienna. Directly guarding the root system of the tree are two large, magnificent peacocks facing outward. Their elongated bodies are rendered in rich blue and orange tones and their massive, outspread trains curve along the base to frame the multi-tiered root mound.
Flanking the central peacocks are four large elephants walking inward from the outer margins. The left register holds a slate-grey and a soft orange elephant, while the right register balances the frame with a chocolate-brown and a vibrant cyan-blue elephant. Each creature is drawn with a raised trunk and fine-line detailing along the eyes and tusks.
The entire composition strikes a flawless equilibrium between folk animation and scriptural elegance. Kalamkari is an ancient Indian art form of painting or printing on fabric using natural dyes and intricate penwork, with its name literally meaning 'craftwork done with a pen'. Flourishing under the Mughals and later the Golconda and Coromandel Sultanates, its prominent centers are Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. This art form traditionally depicts Hindu mythological epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana, featuring deities and common occurrences, characterized by rounded faces, large eyes, and detailed costumes. Legend connects its origin to Radha teaching the art in Machilipatnam and its use on Hanuman's flag. The meticulous technique involves preparing cotton or silk fabric, outlining designs with a 'kalam' (bamboo or palm stick dipped in fermented jaggery and water) acting as a natural mordant, and then filling in patterns with natural dyes from plants, roots, and minerals. Authentic Kalamkari is identified by hand-drawn or block-printed designs, natural dyes, traditional patterns, and slight imperfections, with motifs often inspired by nature, mythology, and folklore, each carrying cultural and symbolic significance.
