The woman, positioned on the left in profile, features an elongated torso and unique structural line-work outlining her hair, which is swept back in a series of parallel lines. She is dressed in a simple, traditional draped cloth wrapped around her slender frame, her hand raised high in a musical gesture while her other arm holds a long bow or structural tool resting against the ground.
The man stands on the right, facing his partner with his body rendered in a deep grey. He wears an ornate, geometric tribal crown or headpiece and a simple loincloth wrapped around his waist, holding a slender stick or instrument in his left hand. Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish.
