About the Artwork +

This delicate Mughal miniature painting by Mohan Prajapati presents a naturalist's study of two butterfly specimens, rendered with scientific precision against a luminous gold leaf ground and framed by lines of fine Persianate calligraphy, continuing the imperial tradition of natural history painting cultivated in Mughal ateliers.

Mughal miniature paintings are intricate, highly detailed artworks that flourished in India between the 16th and 19th centuries. This courtly art form uniquely blends bold Indian colors, delicate Persian lines, and European shading, capturing a vivid record of the Mughal era.

Set one above the other on the burnished gold leaf field, the upper specimen is a pale powder-blue butterfly resembling a Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus), its wings dusted in soft silvery-blue with a scalloped border of small black spots and a faint dark margin tracing each wingtip, its slender black body and antennae picked out in fine line work.

Below it rests a larger, more dramatic specimen evocative of the European Peacock butterfly (Aglais io), its wings a rich gradient of burnt orange and amber, each forewing and hindwing bearing a single bold concentric eyespot in blue-black, white, and red, with deep umber-brown, scalloped wing margins framing the design. Both insects are centred within a slim ochre-yellow rule that separates the gold panel from the aged, deckle-edged paper, while horizontal bands of black Persian nasta'liq script run above and below the image, and a single calligraphic folio mark sits beneath the lower border.

The paper itself bears the warm, foxed patina and torn, irregular edges of age, lending the folio the tactile authenticity of a genuine historical manuscript page.

24K gold foil is used in this painting.

    Mohan Prajapati

    Mohan Prajapati
Mohan Prajapati, a Jaipur-based artist, began painting at the age of ten, learning miniature art from his father alongside his brother. With 40 years of experience, he has mastered various miniature art genres, including Mughal and Kangra, and has been particularly recognized for his Mughal miniature work. His art has been exhibited internationally in New York, China, and Bahrain, as well as in local venues. Prajapati's significant achievements include receiving the state award in 2004 and the national award in 2007.

    Miniature Paintings

Miniature painting, an exquisite Indian art form, originated from a striking fusion of ancient Indian styles and the Persian Safavid school, giving birth to the Mughal School. Characterized by gracious strokes and intricate detailing achieved with single-haired brushes, these paintings served as a primary mode of historical archiving under Mughal emperors like Akbar and Jahangir, capturing courtly scenes, wars, mythological tales, and more. The vibrancy of these works was created using natural colors derived from indigo, precious stones, shells, pearls, and real gold and silver, with details so fine they often require a magnifying glass to appreciate. Though the art form saw a decline in patronage towards the end of the 18th century, traditional skills continue to be passed down, with Rajasthan particularly upholding the artistic legacy of Mughal miniature paintings.
