This beautiful Phad painting by Kalyan Joshi departs from massive, sprawling epics to spotlight a minimalist, deeply intimate expression of physical and spiritual harmony. In this composition, a centuries-old storytelling medium is adapted to celebrate the ancient practice of Yoga, capturing a man and a woman mid-asana in perfect synchronization.

Phad painting is a vibrant, 700-year-old scroll painting tradition originating from the Bhilwara region of Rajasthan. Traditionally executed on long sheets of hand-woven cloth (phad), these paintings functioned as mobile temples. Priest-singers (Bhopas) would travel from village to village, unfurling the scrolls at night and singing tales of folk deities like Pabuji and Devnarayan.

Stepping into a contemporary realm, this artwork translates that heritage into a singular narrative moment. The painting depicts a male and a female practitioner standing face-to-face in Vrikshasana (a Yoga posture). Each of them is balancing gracefully on one leg with the opposite foot tucked against the inner thigh. Their hands are brought together in front of their chests in a perfect Anjali Mudra (gesture of prayer).

Both figures display the stylistic hallmarks of traditional Phad art, prominent, large eyes, stylized side-profiles, sharp noses and rounded facial contours that reflect an inner state of calm and mindfulness. The traditional Rajasthani attire has been simplified to fit the modern yoga theme while maintaining its cultural identity. Both figures wear tunics adorned with gold patterns and pants. Their traditional ornamentation is elegant but minimalist, highlighted by golden bangles, armlets and circular earrings (kundals).

To provide a grounded foundation for their practice, the figures stand upon an intricately detailed rectangular mat. This mat is filled with a dense, crisscrossed lattice pattern in gold, punctuated by tiny black dots, and framed by a fine, multi-layered golden fringe. The artwork utilizes a rich red background, a signature color choice in Phad art that traditionally establishes an auspicious and warm setting.

In alignment with modern, minimalist Phad experiments, the framing is clean and simple, with a sharp black border neatly encapsulating the entire red canvas. This prevents any visual distraction, driving focus straight onto the striking symmetry, bold outlines and cultural elegance of the two figures.

Domestic Orders

All prices are inclusive of GST and applicable Indian taxes.

• We offer free shipping on orders above ₹1999 for all artworks, except Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri.
• A flat shipping rate of ₹499 applies to orders below ₹1999.

Shipping is charged on a per-kilogram basis, due to the delicate and bulky nature of these items.

International Orders

• A flat shipping charge of ₹4,000 applies to international artwork orders.
• Customs duties, taxes, or import charges in the buyer’s country are not included and must be borne by the buyer.
• Shipping rates for Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri artworks will be calculated based on weight.

Extra charges may be applicable for both domestic and international deliveries in the following cases:

• If the article requires additional packaging (such as a wooden crate) to ensure safe shipping due to its delicate nature.
