This is a divine piece in Kangra Art by Suresh Kumar Kumawat, depicting Shiva and Parvati on a journey on their respective vahanas. This symbolises the perfect synthesis of worldly love and spiritual devotion and portrays the Lord in his domestic and tender roles. Their union visually translates the harmony required to sustain the universe, a central concept often explored in local texts like the Shiv Purana.
Kangra art is a renowned Indian miniature painting style that originated in Himachal Pradesh in the mid-18th century. Famous for its delicate brushwork, pastel color palette, and lyrical romanticism, it prominently depicts the divine love story of Radha and Krishna and local landscapes. Emerging after the decline of the Basohli school, the style took root in Haripur-Guler when local Rajput rulers gave asylum to refugee artists trained in the Mughal style. This art form flourished under the patronage of Raja Sansar Chand, who made Kangra the most powerful hill state.
At the center of the composition is Lord Shiva, dressed in his iconic tiger skin loincloth, accompanied by Vasuki (snake) on his neck and adorned in Rudraksh jewellery, with his trishul in his hand and the moon on his matted hair. He looks tenderly towards Goddess Parvati, from his place atop of Nandi, his vahana. The bull, Nandi, is adorned in a red coin necklace and ornate horn caps with a green cloth on his back for Lord Shiva.
Beisde him is Goddess Parvati, dressed in orange and yellow with garments, adorned with a maang tikka and nosering, reaches upto Lord Shiva with her alta- covered hands joined together in the anjali mudra, revering the Lord. She is sitting atop her lion vahan, who is adorned with a black coin necklace.
The background is of an orange mound and greying skies as they walk along the lush water body with lotus blooms and other water plants. This composition is triple bordered with thin strips of yellow, followed by white lines and a thick dark blue border that consolidates and completes this beautiful piece.
