This Pichwai painting by Naveen Soni presents a serene pastoral scene of Radha and Krishna in the landscape of Vrindavan, surrounded by a large herd of cows, peacocks, flowering lotuses, trees, rolling hills and the tranquil waters of the Yamuna.
Pichwai paintings are a devotional tradition associated particularly with Nathdwara, where they developed around the worship of Shrinathji, a form of Lord Krishna. Traditionally created to be hung behind the image of the deity in the temple, Pichhwai paintings depict episodes from Krishna’s life, his divine play, seasonal celebrations and the sacred landscape of Vrindavan.
At the centre of the composition, Lord Krishna is seated upon a low rock in lalitasana, rendered in a three-quarter profile. His body is painted in a soft bluish tone, immediately distinguishing him from the surrounding figures. His face is characterised by large, elongated lotus-like eyes, a broad and prominent nose, small lips and a calm, composed expression. His facial features are rendered with considerable symmetry and delicacy, reinforcing the idealised beauty traditionally associated with Krishna’s image. A tilak marks his forehead, while his head is adorned with an elaborate pink-toned headdress topped with a peacock feather.
Krishna is richly ornamented with multiple layers of jewellery, including necklaces, bangles, anklets and a floral garland that falls across his torso. He wears an ochre-yellow dhoti, pitambar, with golden borders, its folds articulated through darker brown lines. Draped around him is a maroon and orange upper garment decorated with small dotted motifs, recalling the visual language of bandhani textiles. In his hands, Krishna holds the bansuri, playing it delicately with both hands. His slender fingers are carefully positioned around the flute, emphasising the moment of musical performance and suggesting that the surrounding animals have gathered to listen to his music.
Seated beside Krishna is Radha, also rendered in three-quarter profile, her face turned towards him. Her expression is one of quiet admiration and devotion. She shares Krishna’s idealised facial characteristics, with elongated eyes, a prominent nose, small lips and an oval-shaped face. Her elaborate jewellery includes necklaces, earrings, a maang tikka, bangles and anklets. She wears a golden lehenga decorated with small dotted motifs, paired with a pink odhani that falls gracefully around her figure. One of her hands rests beneath her chin, reinforcing her contemplative, admiring pose, while the other rests over a golden matka decorated with dotted patterns. Her positioning beside Krishna establishes an intimate yet devotional relationship between the two central figures.
The central pair is surrounded on either side by a large gathering of cows, forming one of the most prominent elements of the composition. The cows are depicted in profile and appear to be moving towards or gathering around Krishna. Although their forms follow a repeated visual structure, variations in colour, including white, pink and blue, prevent the group from appearing completely uniform. One cow is shown seated prominently in the foreground, directly below Krishna, further emphasising the animals’ attentive relationship to him. Together, the herd suggests the familiar pastoral world of Krishna as the cowherd, with the cows gathered around him in response to his music.
Among the cows in the foreground are several peacocks, their slender bodies rendered in blue and cyan tones with accents of green and pink.
Beyond the figures, the painting opens into an expansive Vrindavan landscape. Rolling green hills recede into the distance, with smaller cows visible across the slopes, extending the pastoral scene beyond the central gathering. The landscape is densely populated with trees of different forms and colours, creating layers of foliage that frame Radha and Krishna without overwhelming them. Towards the background, the Yamuna River winds through the landscape, its blue surface punctuated by clusters of pink lotuses. The river continues visually into the foreground, where another stretch of water is filled with lotus flowers and rounded lotus leaves, creating a rhythmic floral register along the bottom edge of the scene.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.

Returns and Replacements
We offer replacements or repairs if your artwork arrives damaged or has a quality issue. As each artwork is handcrafted, we do not accept returns or refunds for orders received in the expected condition.
Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.
