This intricate Pichwai painting by Naveen Soni offers a vibrant and complex narrative centered on Shrinathji.With Raas Leela as the central panel, it is surrounded and framed by a comprehensive visual storytelling sequence of Lord Krishna's various divine leelas.
Pichwai is a traditional cloth-based scroll painting from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, primarily created to adorn the sanctuary of Shrinathji (a seven-year-old child manifestation of Krishna) and is known for its intricate detailing and rich, vivid colors.
The central theme of the composition is Raas Leela. The dark-hued Shrinathji stands at the absolute center, atop a blooming lotus. He is depicted in his classic iconographic posture, his left arm raised to hold Govardhan Parvat, while his right hand rests gracefully in a fist near his waist. He also holds his flute and Kamal Chadi, and wears a mor mukut (peacock feather crown). He is adorned in heavy white floral garlands, ornate jewelry and a brightly patterned, flared garment.
Flanking the deity are elegantly attired gopis, dressed in beautifully detailed, pastel-toned ghagras-cholis in shades of pink, peach and orange. They stand with both arms gracefully raised. Their synchronized posture conveys joyous devotion, capturing the ecstatic energy of bhakti.
Behind the figures is a dense, stylized thicket of deep green, rounded trees punctuated by large, sweeping banana leaves. This verdant backdrop symbolizes the lush, sacred groves of Vrindavan. Above the tree line, the night sky is rendered in a deep, textured blue, densely speckled with white stars. A bright full moon sits perfectly centered above Shrinathji. Floating amidst the stars are celestial chariots carrying deities, including Shiva-Parvati, Brahma-Saraswati and Narada Muni, who observe the earthly celebrations below.
At the bottom right, the narrow strip, similar in color and theme to the primary narrative, features small figures of gopis balancing water pots on their heads, cowherds, and a white cow, beutifully depicting the daan Leela. Daan Leela is a playful episode where Lord Krishna halts the Gopis to lovingly demand a "tax" of their milk, butter and yogurt. Beyond the mischievous surface, this divine play spiritually symbolizes the necessary surrender of materialistic ego and worldly attachments in exchange for unconditional love. To the left is the Annakut (mountain of grains) celebration, a token of appreciation from the villagers to Krishna, who saved them from the wrath of Indra by lifting the Govardhan mountain, known as Govardhan Puja.
Framing this entire central scene on the sides and top is a band of small grid panels. These vignettes serve as a visual scripture, narrating various famous episodes from Lord Krishna's life. They include Krishna subduing the serpent Kaliya (Kaliya Mardan), stealing the gopis' clothes (Chir Haran), playing his flute for the cows, and defeating demons such as Bakasura (the giant crane) and Aghasura (the giant snake), Vasudeva crossing the river with Krishna, Shri Krishna blessing his devotees. It also includes scenes of the divine love of Krishna and Radha.
Enclosing the entire elaborate composition is a continuous, delicate outer border. It features a bright, rhythmic pattern of repeating pink lotus blossoms and green leaves set against a warm, contrasting yellow background. This structured perimeter elegantly contains the immense mythological detail within a traditional finish.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
