This handcrafted leather lampshade by Sindhe Sriramulu is executed in the traditional Tholu Bommalata style, adapting the visual language of shadow puppetry into a contemporary decorative object. Its composition centres on a richly ornamented elephant surrounded by flowering vines and luminous colour, bringing together the craft’s characteristic relationship with pattern and light.
Tholu Bommalata is an ancient leather craft historically associated with Andhra Pradesh’s shadow-puppet tradition. Artisans traditionally cut and hand-painted translucent leather to create puppets depicting episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and other sacred narratives. In this contemporary adaptation, the same techniques have been applied to a lampshade, preserving the intricate craftsmanship, vibrant colours and luminous quality of the traditional art form.
The lampshade takes the form of a rectangular trapezoidal lantern, tapering gently towards the top and resting upon four slender metallic supports. Its translucent leather surface allows the painted colours to glow when illuminated from within, recalling the dramatic effect of puppets held against a light source during Tholu Bommalata performances.
Occupying the lower portion of the composition is a richly decorated elephant shown in profile, facing towards the left. Its large almond-shaped eye, curved trunk, prominent tusk and rounded forehead are defined through bold black outlines and flowing contour lines. The body is covered with ornamental trappings, including decorative blankets, headgear, necklaces, anklets and layered harnesses, all articulated through scalloped, concentric and geometric motifs. Warm yellow, orange, magenta pink and white tones enrich the coverings, while black outlines bring the various details together.
Rising above the elephant is a golden-yellow flowering vine that moves vertically through the composition in a series of looping curves. Along its length are four large floral medallions, each formed from concentric layers of crimson, pink, white, yellow and black petals surrounding detailed circular centres. Smaller white floral and foliate motifs fill the deep black background, creating a dense decorative field while maintaining a balanced rhythm across the lampshade.
The elephant stands upon a stylised ground composed of green leaves emerging from textured brown mounds, suggesting vegetation through simplified decorative forms. Along the lower edge, repeating semicircular motifs enclosed within parallel bands create a firm ornamental base, while the upper edge is finished with horizontal borders and a frieze of white leaf forms.
When illuminated, the warm colours radiate through the leather and highlight the floral ornamentation, decorative trappings and expressive contours of the elephant. Through its rhythmic composition, richly patterned surface and luminous craftsmanship, the lampshade translates the artistic language of Tholu Bommalata into a functional object while preserving the distinctive heritage of Andhra Pradesh’s leather-painting tradition.
