About the Artwork +
This handcrafted leather lampshade by Sindhe Sriramulu is executed in the traditional Tholu Bommalata style of Nimmalakunta, Andhra Pradesh, adapting the visual language of shadow puppetry into a contemporary decorative object. Its central peacock is framed by monumental paisley-like plumage, floral scrolls and richly ornamented borders, creating a composition that combines stylisation, rhythm and luminous colour.
Tholu Bommalata is a centuries-old leather craft historically associated with Andhra Pradesh’s shadow-puppet tradition. Artisans traditionally processed, perforated and hand-painted translucent leather to create puppets depicting episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and regional legends. In this contemporary adaptation, the same techniques have been applied to a lampshade, preserving the craft’s intricate detailing, vibrant palette and distinctive relationship with light.
The lampshade takes the form of a gently tapering conical lantern, broad at the base and narrowing towards the top, supported by four slender metallic legs. Its translucent leather surface radiates a warm golden glow when illuminated from within, allowing the painted colours and perforated patterns to shine with clarity.
At the centre is a graceful peacock shown in profile, facing towards the right. The bird is defined through bold black outlines and stylised decorative forms rather than naturalistic modelling. Its green crest, almond-shaped eye, pointed beak and elegantly curved neck lend the figure a refined and expressive character. The body is painted in ochre and orange, with darker orange accents along the contours, while scalloped borders, concentric motifs and fine linear details enrich its surface. The folded wing is articulated through repeated parallel feather patterns.
The most striking feature is the peacock’s stylised plumage, transformed into two monumental paisley-like forms rising behind the bird. Filled with alternating bands of green, turquoise, cream and black, these elongated motifs abstract the tail feathers into flowing ornamental shapes while retaining their grandeur. Their sweeping curves frame the central figure, guide the eye upwards and introduce balance and movement to the composition.
The lower section is filled with floral scrolls, spiral motifs and semicircular decorative forms in orange, green, cream and black. Rather than depicting a realistic landscape, these overlapping elements create an ornamental field of rhythmic curves and concentric patterns. Borders along the upper and lower edges further enclose the composition, combining circular motifs, scalloped friezes and fine linear bands with remarkable precision.
When illuminated, the warm ochres, oranges, greens, turquoise, cream and black become exceptionally radiant through the translucent leather. The light accentuates every contour, feather, floral scroll and geometric detail, transforming the lampshade into both a functional source of illumination and a work of art. Through its graceful peacock, abstracted plumage and intricate ornamentation, the piece translates the historic visual language of Tholu Bommalata into a contemporary expression of Andhra Pradesh’s leather-craft heritage.
