This hand-painted leather lampshade by Sindhe Sriramulu from the Tholu Bommalata tradition of Andhra Pradesh, depicts Radha and Krishna performing a graceful dance within a richly ornamented garden setting. Executed on translucent leather, the tapering conical form emits a warm golden glow when illuminated, enhancing the delicate linework and bringing vibrancy to the intricate painted details.
Tholu Bommalata is a centuries-old leather craft historically associated with Andhra Pradesh’s shadow-puppet tradition. Artisans traditionally processed, perforated and hand-painted translucent leather to create puppets representing episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and regional legends. In this contemporary adaptation, the same techniques have been applied to a lampshade.
At the centre of the composition, Radha and Krishna face one another across a slender flowering tree. Krishna stands slightly to the left of the tree, while Radha occupies the right side. Their raised arms, gently bent knees and expressive hand gestures create a sense of rhythmic movement, evoking the graceful vocabulary of classical Indian dance. Although separated by the tree, their mirrored postures suggest harmony, intimacy and divine companionship.
The figures display the characteristic visual conventions of Tholu Bommalata. Their faces are rendered in strict profile, while their torsos are shown frontally, creating the distinctive combination of viewpoints associated with Andhra Pradesh’s leather shadow puppets. Both figures have large almond-shaped eyes outlined in bold black, sharply pointed noses, arched eyebrows and finely defined lips. Krishna is identified by his elaborate crown and peacock feather, while Radha wears an ornate coiffure decorated with floral ornaments.
Both dancers are richly adorned with layered necklaces, earrings, armlets, bangles, anklets, waistbands and elaborate head ornaments. Their garments are filled with delicate linear patterns that describe the folds of the fabric and enhance the impression of flowing movement. The carefully drawn jewellery and costume details also contribute to the ceremonial and divine character of the scene.
A slender flowering tree rises through the centre of the lampshade, its branches spreading across the upper portion and supporting oversized blossoms. Large flowers, curling vines, stylised leaves and flowering shrubs fill the surrounding space, while clusters of small plants and decorative floral motifs animate the ground. Rather than depicting a naturalistic landscape, the artist transforms the garden into a dense ornamental setting that frames the dancing figures.
The composition is executed primarily in fine black linework against the warm ochre yellow tone of the leather. When illuminated, the translucent surface glows softly, revealing the contours of the figures, the details of their costumes and the surrounding botanical forms. Decorative borders of concentric circles, scalloped bands and linear motifs frame the upper and lower edges, lending balance and symmetry to the design.
Through its combination of narrative, ornamentation and luminous craftsmanship, the lampshade captures the divine companionship of Radha and Krishna through the expressive visual language of Tholu Bommalata. It transforms a traditional shadow-puppetry aesthetic into a contemporary lighting object while retaining the delicacy, rhythm and storytelling character of Andhra Pradesh’s leather-art tradition.

Returns and Replacements
