This Chamba Rumal embroidery by artist Anjali Vakil is a beautiful example of the "needle painting" tradition from Himachal Pradesh, known for its double-sided satin stitch that looks identical on both sides. The artwork is rendered on a hand-spun, unbleached khaddar (cotton) base, which provides a neutral, rustic background for the vibrant silk threads. The scene depicts an intimate moment of royal service within a palace setting, likely featuring a noblewoman or queen being attended to by her servant.
The central figures are meticulously embroidered using a rich palette of jewel tones. The seated noblewoman is dressed in a vibrant magenta and blue tunic, resting on a green-cushioned seat, while her attendant, clad in a contrasting orange and blue outfit, is shown washing her feet. Traditional palace accessories, including a golden ewer (water pot) and a small drinking vessel, are placed nearby, adding to the narrative of high-status daily life.
The background elements provide architectural and natural context to the scene. A diagonal lattice-work fence or railing separates the figures from a minimalist landscape, where delicate green lines and small leaf clusters suggest rolling hills and a nearby pond with floating lotuses. The fine, fluid outlines of the figures and the landscape reflect the Pahari miniature painting style that historically influenced this embroidery tradition. By using fine silk threads to recreate the elegance of a painting, Anjali Vakil preserves a craft that was once a prestigious part of a bride's dowry in the Chamba valley.

Returns and Replacements

Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.
