Krishna Tashi Palmo is a determined and resilient Thangka artist, notable as one of the few women in this traditional art form. Despite being affected by polio, her indomitable spirit and passion for art led her to study at a Tibetan traditional art school in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul Spiti district from 2006 to 2012. Breaking gender norms in a field where women's participation was uncommon, Krishna's artistry transcends physical limitations. She not only pursues her own artistic journey but also teaches children at a local NGO, aspiring to create a unique identity and challenge gender boundaries in the art world.

Thangka Art

Thangka art is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist painting form, widely practiced in India's Himalayan regions, executed on cotton or silk canvas. These sacred scrolls serve as instrumental tools for teaching and meditation, depicting Buddhist themes like mandalas, deities, and scriptural scenes, with some regional variations reflecting local practices. Originating from early Buddhist paintings in India and China, Thangka developed as a portable religious art in Tibet before flourishing in Indian regions such as Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. The art form is rich in symbolism, often illustrating concepts like the Wheel of Life and Mandalas for spiritual guidance. Creating a Thangka is a meticulous process, involving stretching a treated canvas, outlining images under strict religious guidelines, and filling them with vibrant natural pigments from minerals and plants, with gold leaf often highlighting key elements. The use of color is highly significant, aiding in deity identification, and the completed paintings are traditionally framed with silk brocades. This time-consuming art requires not only painting skill but also deep knowledge of Buddhist scriptures and iconography, with artists like Krishna Tashi Palmo and Gyaltsen Zimba preserving this exquisite tradition.
