About the Artwork +
This breathtaking and iconographically dense Kalighat painting by Sonali Chitrakar presents a vertical, highly stylized depiction of a unique composite form of the deity, blending the dual masculine and feminine energies of Shiva and Shakti into a single entity while enacting the slaying of the buffalo demon. Characterized by its monumental focal figures and bold contours, the composition masterfully handles traditional sacred iconography through a vibrant folk lens.
Kalighat painting is a traditional art form that originated in the 19th century around the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, Bengal, practiced by the Patua community. It is celebrated for its sweeping, lyrical brushstrokes, bold color fills, and a unique blend of mythological themes with satirical commentary on contemporary life. Traditionally executed with water-based pigments on paper, this style is renowned for its rapid, expressive line-work and minimalistic backgrounds that emphasize the volume and dramatic expressions of the central figures.
The composition centers around the half-and-half split visage and body of the main deity standing powerfully over the battlefield. The left half of the figure represents Lord Shiva, rendered in a striking dark slate-blue skin tone, with arms adorned with white patterned bands and holding a white trident (trishula), a spear, a khadga and other weapons. The right half embodies Goddess Durga, rendered in a warm, vibrant golden-ochre pigment, with her corresponding arms executed in radiating shades of orange and sienna, holding various weapons. The central face features a combined third eye on the forehead, elongated fish-shaped eyes, and long, flowing black hair that cascades symmetrically down the back. The deity is wrapped in an opulent crimson sari decorated with hundreds of delicate white star clusters and cross-hatched borders.
Plunging from the upper torso down past the waist is a long white spear that pieces the chest of the green-skinned demon Mahishasura at the bottom right. The demon is depicted with wide Kalighat eyes and a thick black mustache, falling backwards in defeat. Supporting the central deity's feet is a fierce, stylized lion mount rendered in warm tan with dark brown stripes, shown actively attacking the demon. The entire scene unfolds against a muted, solid slate-grey background that isolates the vibrant colors of the figures, framed cleanly by a broad, natural paper border.
Ultimately, this composition transcends standard mythological portraiture to function as a profound visual commentary on the cosmic balance of universal energies. By seamlessly merging the ascetic power of Shiva with the fierce, protective presence of Durga within a singular rhythmic execution, Sonali Chitrakar masterfully utilizes the fluid lines of Bengal's Patua heritage to celebrate the infinite, interconnected dimensions of divine sovereignty.
