This vibrant Gond painting by Saroj Venkat Shyam reinterprets legendary Ramayana folklore, depicting the vanara brothers Bali and Sugreeva beneath a monumental tree prior to their fateful confrontation.
Gond art is a traditional Indian tribal art form practiced by the Gond community of Madhya Pradesh, acting as cultural memory and often depicting local deities, folklore, forests and animals that the community lived alongside. It is deeply connected to nature, with animals, trees, birds, rivers symbolising balance and coexistence.
At the foundation of the composition stand the legendary vanara kings, Bali and Sugreeva, poised on their hind legs on either side of the trunk. Before their epic conflict unfolds, the brothers embrace the tree in a moment of quiet unity, their faces turned toward one another in profile. Their bodies are rendered in warm, horizontal bands of mustard yellow, olive green and dark brown, while their long, slender tails curve outward and sweep upward.
Rising above the brothers is a sturdy central trunk painted in vibrant cobalt blue with dark horizontal bands, extending branches outward to form a structured canopy. Perched along these limbs are four additional vanaras seated in symmetrical pairs, two on the left and two on the right, their terracotta bodies detailed with fine line-hatching. At the highest point of the canopy sits a grand tiger in a watchful, crouching posture, wrapped in diagonal stripes of radiant yellow, orange and crimson.
The entire composition is engulfed in a rich foliage of small, oval leaves painted in alternating crimson red and deep indigo blue, creating a vibrant contrast against the blue branches and striped figures. The artist's signature motif is the 'Naag', inspired by the form of a snake, which she calls 'Naagvanshi Shyam'. This distinctive pattern forms the foundation of her unique style. Set against a plain background, the strong vertical symmetry highlights both, the intimate fraternal stance at the base as well as the apex predator at the top of the forest canopy, blending epic storytelling with traditional art.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
