This captivating Gond painting by Saroj Venkat Shyam depicts a typical forest scene, featuring a magnificent tree that harbors birds, a tiger and a herd of deer.
Gond art is a traditional Indian tribal art form practiced by the Gond community of Madhya Pradesh, acting as cultural memory and often depicting local deities, folklore, forests and animals that the community lived alongside. It is deeply connected to nature, with animals, trees, birds, rivers symbolising balance and coexistence.
At the base of the central tree trunk stand four alert deer, arranged symmetrically in pairs with their heads tilted upward, looking in fear at the tiger. Directly above them, a large grey tiger sprawls horizontally across the middle register of the canvas, its body contorted in a sweeping arch. The tiger’s head and forelimbs bend downward into a fluid posture that mirrors the silhouette of a bird, seamlessly blending feline power with avian grace. Rising above this central gathering is the sweeping canopy of the tree, whose winding branches harbor a flock of vibrant birds perched amidst the foliage.
The trunk and overarching branches are rendered in the artist’s signature pattern. The body of the tiger is detailed with dense, curving black line-hatching that lends a sleek, shadowy depth to its form, while the leaves of the canopy are filled with deep forest green and punctuated by tiny, bright yellow blossoms. In contrast, the bodies of the deer and birds are filled with fine geometric cross-hatching.
The color palette creates a striking visual dialogue between monochromatic shading and luminous primary tones. The artist's signature motif is the 'Naag', inspired by the form of a snake, which she calls 'Naagvanshi Shyam'. This distinctive pattern forms the foundation of her unique style. Set against a plain background, the outer contour of the leafy tree acts as a self-contained, organic frame for the composition. The artwork captures the fluid boundaries between species, celebrating the shared life force that unites the animal kingdom under nature’s protection.
