About the Artwork +
This striking pair of circular woven art pieces by Urmila Devi highlights the ancient, eco-conscious heritage of Uttar Pradesh’s traditional Moonj craft. Through a meticulously coiled radial structure, the artwork transforms natural fibers into a captivating display of geometric symmetry, tactile rhythm and organic warmth.
Moonj craft is a centuries-old indigenous weaving tradition rooted along the fertile riverbanks of the Ganga and Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh. The art form relies on wild perennial grasses, primarily Kasa (Kaans) grass, which provides a rigid, durable core framework, and flexible Moonj grass, which is harvested, sun-dried and coiled around the base.
In this composition, Urmila Devi incorporates white taat (sturdy binding thread), skillfully wrapping the grass bundle while leaving selective sections of the natural golden-brown grass exposed to form intricate geometric patterns. At the heart of each circular disc lies a tightly coiled spiral core that radiates outward in balanced, expanding symmetry.
Spreading from the central core is a bold multi-pointed starburst pattern forming a blooming lotus mandala. The graphic play between the deep tan tone of the exposed grass and the clean, off-white taat thread gives the design visual movement and depth. Parallel rings of uniform coiling expand from the center toward the perimeter, guiding the eye smoothly across the entire face of the canvas.
The artwork celebrates a minimalist, eco-aesthetic color scheme. Earthy, un-dyed tones of sun-cured Moonj and Kasa grass bring natural warmth and authenticity. The tightly wound taat thread offers clean contrast, sharpening the edges of the floral motif. The raised, textured ridges created by the coiling process give the flat circular forms a rich three-dimensional presence.
Enclosing the intricate geometric detail is a clean, solid white outer rim that provides structural stability and visually binds the composition. Subtle variations between the upper and lower discs highlight the organic, hand-crafted nature of the process. Fitted with a woven hanging loop at the top edge, the design seamlessly bridges traditional utility with contemporary wall art.
