This vibrant six-piece collection of square framed trays by Sujata Mandal celebrates the graphic charm and color versatility of West Bengal’s traditional Bamboo weaving (Bansh Shilpa). Through a rich, multi-colored palette, the artwork transforms traditional handloom techniques into lively, modern art.
Bamboo craft in West Bengal is a centuries-old tradition where master artisans hand-split mature bamboo poles into razor-thin, pliable slivers (chtai). In this collection, Sujata Mandal infuses the age-old medium with contemporary flair by applying bold, saturated dyes to the woven bamboo strips. Utilizing tight twill-weaving methods, the alternating direction of the strips creates a subtle, light-reflecting geometric motif within each solid colorway.
While each panel is rendered in its own unique hue, all six pieces share a unified geometric language. Each square panel is anchored by a prominent, central diamond motif that expands outward in rhythmic, parallel chevrons toward the edges. The precise, multi-directional alignment of the fine bamboo slivers causes light to catch the edges differently, creating an optical depth that makes the flat woven surface feel sculpted.
The ensemble features six rich individual hues, electric red, deep blue, charcoal grey, warm terracotta, natural beige and olive green. The dye interacts naturally with the underlying sheen of the bamboo wood, giving each color a subtle, organic gradient rather than a flat finish.
Each piece is encased within a deep, color-coordinated square tray frame with raised edges. These crisp structural borders neatly enclose the intricate geometric diamond weaves, giving the individual units a clean, modern silhouette that allows them to be displayed together as a striking group installation or featured as standalone accent pieces.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
