About the Artwork +
Hailing from Telangana, India, Cheriyal Scroll painting is a lively and fascinating tradition of visual storytelling. These long, painted scrolls come alive with bright colours and energetic characters, depicting narratives ranging from Hindu epics and local legends to reflections on current social themes, all within a unique artistic framework. This vibrant Cheriyal Scroll painting by master artist Sai Kiran exquisitely captures a quintessential scene of daily village life, highlighting the essential chore of water collection, rich in cultural and aesthetic significance. Set against the classic red background framed with a floral and vine border, the painting presents a graceful tableau of three female figures in harmonious motion. On the right side, a woman in a deep green saree leans skillfully over a large, grey stone well, drawing water with a traditional pulley and rope mechanism, her poised stance and firm grip revealing strength and familiarity with this daily task. Her detailed jewelry and patterned attire exemplify the folk art’s intricate decorative style. Just behind her, a young girl in a blue and green outfit, perhaps her daughter or a younger village helper, balances a pot on her waist, actively engaged in the routine, symbolizing the intergenerational transfer of roles and responsibilities. To the left, another elegantly adorned woman in a blue saree walks gracefully with a brass pot balanced on her head, likely filled with freshly drawn water, her posture proud and effortless, exuding calm determination. Above them, a flowering tree arches protectively, tying the scene together with nature’s nurturing presence. In the background, the presence of a house with visible female figures peeking out from a doorway adds further warmth and realism to this rural narrative. Sai Kiran’s stylized expressions, vibrant palette, and fine brushwork bring this slice of village life to life, celebrating the resilience, grace, and rhythm of rural womanhood in Telangana's cherished folk tradition.
