About the Artwork +

This intricate Thangka painting by Gyaltsen Zimba depicts the Eight Manifestations of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Tshen Gye) and his life story. Originating as a form of sacred scroll painting on canvas, Thangkas function as vital meditational tools, guiding practitioners along the path to enlightenment.

Dominating the center of the canvas is Guru Tsokyi Dorje, a principal form of Guru Padmasambhava. He sits in a state of supreme, dignified composure on an elaborate multi-tiered lotus throne that floats above a deep blue ocean. He has a serene countenance and is dressed in rich, layered robes adorned with fine golden patterns. He wears his signature lotus hat, holds a golden vajra to his heart in his right hand, and cradles a skull-cup (kapala) containing a longevity vase in his left hand. A trident khatvanga staff rests against his left shoulder.

Flanking him at his throne's base are his two foremost spiritual consorts, seated on smaller lotus cushions. To his left is Khandro Yeshe Tsogyal, the enlightened dakini from Tibet, depicted with a light complexion, holding a ritual offering. To his right is Lhacham Mandarawa, the royal princess of Zahor, gracefully mirroring the devotional posture on the opposing side. A luminous white halo and a pink-tinged outer cloud aura encircle the central group, separating them from the broader landscape.

At the top of the Thangka, are three prominent figures seated in the bright blue sky among soft white clouds. In the middle is Buddha Amitabha, the primordial Buddha of the Lotus Family. He is identifiable by his deep red-colored body, seated in full meditation (dhyana mudra) holding an alms bowl on a wide lotus base, backed by an ornate golden aura.

To his left is Guru Urgyen Dorje Chang, representing the primordial, tantric aspect of the Guru in a male-and-female union (Yab-Yum). The deep blue-bodied male deity holds a vajra and bell while embracing his light-complexioned consort. A golden-skinned, monastic Buddha figure (representing Buddha Shakyamuni) sits at the right, draped in a patterned orange robe with his right hand reaching down in the earth-witness gesture.

The narrative manifestations of Guru Padmasambhava's life story are beautifully arranged, moving symmetrically down the canvas. In the second row, to the left is Guru Loden Choksey, depicted as a princely youth with a fair complexion, holding a small hand-drum (damaru) and a skull-cup, seated on a throne against a mountain backdrop. To the right is Guru Pema Gyalpo (Lotus King), shown in royal robes of deep red and blue, sitting in a relaxed posture of royal ease (lalitasana) on a throne, holding a small hand-drum.

In the third row, to the left is Guru Senge Dradok, a fiercely powerful and wrathful manifestation. He is rendered with a deep blue body, surrounded by an intense, blazing orange halo of wisdom fire as he tramples negative forces beneath his feet. To the right is Guru Dorje Drolo, the intensely wrathful form assumed to consecrate the tiger's nest. He is depicted with a wild, reddish-brown body, riding a pregnant, snarling tigress amid a roaring, tempestuous wall of red and orange flames.

At the centre in the bottom row is a serene figure representing Guru Pema Jungne nestled directly at the water's edge. To the left is Guru Nyima Odser (Ray of the Sun), depicted with a golden-yellow, ascetic body, partially clad in a tiger-skin loincloth, holding a trident staff (khatvanga) while pointing towards the sun rays. To the right is Guru Shakya Senge, Padmasambhava in his ordained monk aspect. He is dressed in classical brick-red and saffron bhikshu (monastic) robes, holding an alms bowl in his lap, with a shaved head or monastic cap, radiating peace from a white circular halo.

The environment perfectly ties the distinct scenes together. The top half is dominated by a bright blue sky filled with stylized white clouds. The middle ground features soft green and tan rolling mountains that recede into the distance. The bottom half is split by a deep blue ocean filled with frothing white-capped waves, representing the sea from which the lotus-born Guru emerged. This artwork is both visually exhilarating and deeply meditative.

    Gyaltsen Zimba

    Gyaltsen Zimba
Gyaltsen Zimba Ji, a 38-year-old artist from Gangtok, Sikkim, began his artistic journey in 2000, specializing in traditional Tibetan painting, a craft he learned through five years of formal training in Darjeeling and within his family's heritage. He holds a particular reverence for Gurupedma Shanbwa painting and predominantly depicts gods, utilizing golden and brown hues for divine elegance, especially in border outlines. Though he has not pursued formal education beyond his initial training and has yet to venture onto online platforms, Gyaltsen is deeply dedicated to popularizing traditional Tibetan painting across India, aiming to preserve and promote his cultural heritage through his artistry.

    Thangka Art

Thangka art is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist painting form, widely practiced in India's Himalayan regions, executed on cotton or silk canvas. These sacred scrolls serve as instrumental tools for teaching and meditation, depicting Buddhist themes like mandalas, deities, and scriptural scenes, with some regional variations reflecting local practices. Originating from early Buddhist paintings in India and China, Thangka developed as a portable religious art in Tibet before flourishing in Indian regions such as Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. The art form is rich in symbolism, often illustrating concepts like the Wheel of Life and Mandalas for spiritual guidance. Creating a Thangka is a meticulous process, involving stretching a treated canvas, outlining images under strict religious guidelines, and filling them with vibrant natural pigments from minerals and plants, with gold leaf often highlighting key elements. The use of color is highly significant, aiding in deity identification, and the completed paintings are traditionally framed with silk brocades. This time-consuming art requires not only painting skill but also deep knowledge of Buddhist scriptures and iconography, with artists like Krishna Tashi Palmo and Gyaltsen Zimba preserving this exquisite tradition.
