About the Artwork +
This intricate Warli painting by artist Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare centres on a termite mound rising in the forest, an unassuming earthen structure that the artist regards as a quiet marvel of the natural world. Rendered in monochromatic tones, the composition blends traditional Warli geometry with fine, dense linework to capture not the mound's appearance alone but the energy the artist senses radiating from it.
Warli painting is a traditional tribal art form from Maharashtra, India, created by the Warli people of the Sahyadri hill region using simple geometric shapes, circles, triangles and squares, to depict daily life and the natural world. Traditionally painted with a white rice-paste mixture applied by bamboo stick onto walls prepared with red-brown mud and cow dung, the tradition's themes span gods and goddesses, harvest, fauna and ritual, reflecting a worldview in which even the smallest features of the landscape are understood to hold their own significance. Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare works within this tradition, here bringing that same attentiveness to a structure most would walk past without a second glance.
At the lower right of the canvas sits the termite mound itself, rendered as a tight cluster of small triangular peaks in a glowing red-orange, the only passage of colour in an otherwise monochrome composition. From this base, tall wavering vertical forms rise the full height of the canvas, worked in fine white stippling banded against darker ground to suggest columns of heat or unseen force ascending steadily skyward, the visible trace of the energy the artist describes feeling whenever he stands before such a mound in the forest. To the left, a substantial tree spreads outward in dense, finely worked foliage, a squirrel resting on one of its branches, its white trunk curving down into the surrounding undergrowth. A formation of white birds flies past in the upper portion of the sky, near a stippled sun in one corner, with a crescent moon set opposite. The lower two-thirds of the canvas are given over to an exceptionally detailed tapestry of forest floor plants, ferns, flowering stalks and slender bamboo-like growth, rendered leaf by leaf in fine white line, filling the ground beneath both tree and mound in unbroken, textured density.
Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare has spoken of this painting as arising directly from time spent observing anthills in the forests near his home. In his own words, he has always regarded nature as his mentor and describes wandering the local forest to learn from even its smallest creatures, doubting that humans are truly the most intelligent among them. Of the termite mound itself, he has said that its inhabitants' efficiency never fails to amaze him and that standing before such a mound, he senses a distinct energy, an energy vital to humanity, which he set out to capture in this painting. Because he has always encountered these mounds beneath the trees of the forest, he chose to depict the surrounding woodland alongside it, reflecting his broader conviction that every living creature carries its own extraordinary energy, and that this energy, taken together, is what sustains and preserves the natural world.
In setting a humble termite mound beside a tree full of quiet forest life and rendering both within the same rippling field of unseen energy, this artwork gives visible form to a belief the artist holds at the centre of his practice: that nature's smallest, most overlooked structures are as alive with force and purpose as its grandest. Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare's Energy of Termite Mound stands as a meditation on that conviction, translating a moment of forest observation into a sustained study of the energy he believes runs through all living things.
