About the Artwork +
This striking Madhubani painting by Abdhesh Kumar Karn depicts a complex "Fish Mandala" composition, showcasing the exquisite symmetry, rhythmic patterning and vibrant storytelling characteristic of the Mithila art school.
Madhubani painting, also called Mithila painting, is a folk art tradition of the Mithila region in north Bihar, sustained for centuries by women of the household who painted on the freshly plastered mud walls and floors of their homes. Characterized by complex geometrical patterns, these paintings are known for representing ritual content for particular occasions, including festivals and religious rituals. A defining principle of this tradition is the complete filling of the canvas with elaborate background texturing, ensuring that no negative space remains blank.
In Mithila folklore, the fish (Matsya) is a deeply sacred symbol representing fertility, good luck, procreation and cosmic abundance. By arranging dozens of stylized fish into concentric, radiating circular bands, the artist creates a mesmerizing mandala that visually represents eternal life cycles, cosmic harmony and the infinite flow of nature.
The painting is structured as a series of concentric circles spinning outward from a tightly knit central core, rendered in a high-contrast palette of solid prussian blue and monochromatic black-and-white. The absolute center of the mandala features a cluster of four stylized fish swimming inward, their white heads joined together. These central fish are intricately detailed with fine cross-hatched scales on their bodies that accentuate the symmetry of the core. Between them are lotus motifs, associated in Indian art with purity.
Radiating outward from this central quartet are several expanding rings of meticulously painted fish to create an optical illusion of dynamic, swirling motion. Each individual fish across these spinning layers is identical in its masterful execution, featuring a stark white head, a large and expressive circular eye outlined in black ink and a body densely patterned with hand-inked horizontal scales.
The vibrant, solid blue background fills every single pocket of negative space between the creatures, highlighting the monochrome fish. A bold black border at the edge acts as a perfect visual anchor for the intricate patterns and vibrant colors within, delivering a beautifully cohesive and authentic folk masterpiece that honors the enduring legacy of Madhubani heritage.
