This exquisite five-piece set of circular woven discs by Gulshana Akhter celebrates the understated sophistication and organic warmth of Kashmir’s traditional Willow Wicker craft (Veer Kani). Through a harmonious blend of natural, un-dyed and deeply toned willow reeds, the installation showcases a diverse repertoire of geometric motifs, radial symmetry and intricate weaving techniques.
Willow wicker weaving is a celebrated heritage craft native to the Kashmir Valley, where fine, pliable shoots of the willow tree (Salix) are harvested, boiled, peeled and hand-woven. In this installation, the natural aesthetic of the wood is emphasized, utilizing varying shades from pale cream and warm caramel to rich chestnut brown and dark charcoal to build sophisticated graphic contrast.
The ensemble functions as a cohesive visual gallery across five distinct circular canvases. The largest piece in the set (top left) features a dense, uniformly woven structure in a deep chestnut brown, anchored at the center by a traditional raised, cross-hatched diamond medallion. To its right, a captivating tri-color pinwheel design that swirls dark charcoal, pale blonde and warm brown reeds into a sweeping, fluid motion around a light central core.
At the bottom right is a multi-ring disc defined by radiating spokes, where pale natural reeds contrast with warm brown structural ribs to create a striking wheel-like effect. A smaller, high-contrast medallion right at the top, in the middle, features alternating wedge patterns of dark charcoal and pale natural willow, evoking a bold geometric star. A delicate, smaller disc rendered in light cream-colored wicker, encircled by a warm brown perimeter that grounds its soft, uniform weave is placed at the bottom left.
Each disc is framed with a sturdy, multi-strand outer rim of tightly bound willow rods. These smooth, rounded borders preserve the structural geometry of each piece, providing a refined, clean finish that unifies the diverse patterns into a striking wall display.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
