About the Artwork +
This particular Pithora painting by Kamta Tahed beautifully delineates the dynamic celebration of ‘Gal Dev Bapsi’, a celebration performed after the Holika Dahan by a group of men and women, capturing the true essence of tribal tradition and their cultural belief system.
Pithora art is popular among the Rathwa communities of Gujarat and has extended to the Madhya Pradesh region. This folk art tradition is also recognised by the Bhil and Bhilwala communities. The major significance of this art lies in its connection to nature, as it often depicts animals, trees and daily life scenes that reflect the social and cultural milieu. Originally, these paintings were created on walls in honour of Baba Pithora, also popularly known as ritualistic paintings.
In this vibrant artwork, one can see a group of people engaging in joyous festivities of Gal dev bapsi, playing and singing together. At the centre of the frame, a horizontal structure is erected, and the maan is being raised; on top of the trunk, four men sit at each end. The men who are climbing the trees are the patrons of the maan and are meant to be attired as the groom and bring down the maan as his desire for a good harvest is being fulfilled by the tribal deities.
Surrounding the sanctuary, both sides of the scene feature men and women dancing, playing drums, performing kartabs and bringing the goat to the celebration. This goat here is meant for the sacrificial ritual to the maan, presumably a gift offered to the maan.To the left of the painting, a tree is in full bloom, with birds chirping, symbolising life. Vessels are placed on the pedestals of the structure, further representing the vitality of the occasion.
The celebration is meant to acquire a good harvest of the season. The farmer or the community creates a ‘Maan’, a flag or staff that is worshipped for a year. Upon a successful harvest, he invites the whole community to the field where he has situated that particular maan and celebrates it with the sacrifice of a goat.
The painting is rendered in a horizontal frame, bordered by consecutive inverted triangles in monochromatic colours. The overall palette consists of reds and maroons, with two men in yellow and mustard figures climbing the stairs, adding contrast and balance to the composition. The characters are depicted in a frontal posture and exhibit a 2D perspective with flat dimensions, showcasing a stylised technique that enhances the Pithora artwork.
Overall, this representation is quite unique and rare, created by the artist to showcase a unique tribal festival to the audience. This anthropological visual is remarkable.
