The wooden sculpture showcased here depicts the splendid representation of Lord Ganesha, dancing on a serpent, reflecting his form metaphorically as the one who masters the quality of protecting the entire universe and the essence of vighnaharta (removing all the obstacles). The artist has used the Kumbla wood (Gmelina arborea), a lightweight yet durable medium traditionally sourced from the deciduous forests of Kerala; this organic material reflects the rich South Indian heritage of temple woodcarving.
Lord Ganesha is shown dancing on a serpent, resembling Lord Krishna’s narration of Kaliya mardan. Ganesha’s one foot is resting on the hood of the serpent while the other is raised and positioned diagonally. He is depicted as a four-armed deity holding his attributes such as ankusha (elephant goad), a pasha (noose), holding the tail of the serpent and gesturing abhaya mudra. This attributive iconography is symbolic of his spiritual well-being.
The deity's facial features are characterised by almond-shaped eyes and a gracefully curving trunk with the delineation of the tusk, and he wears a crown. Ganesha is embellished with intricately carved ornaments and draped in a lower garment. His prominent belly, identifying him as Lambodara, represents his ability to digest all the experiences of the universe harmoniously. It is bound securely by a Naga (serpent) wrapped around his waist, signifying cosmic restraint, time, and resilience.
The serpent symbolises illusion, destruction and evil, which Lord Ganesha controls. The serpent is five-hooded, with a naturalistic anatomical body and scales on a tail. His tail is flowing rhythmically, suggestive of movement in a still material, bringing the artist's imagination to life.
