About the Artwork +
This an exquisite Pichwai painting by artist Naveen Soni portrays the Gopashtami festival for Shrinathji, in his most prominent and renowned form of Govardhan Dhari, which honors Lord Krishna's transition from a calf herder to a full-fledged cowherd, rendered using pure silver leafing and pigments on cotton.
Pichwai painting is a devotional textile art tradition from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, created to be hung behind the murti of Shrinathji, a form of Krishna worshipped at the Nathdwara temple. Traditionally rendered in natural pigments, gold, and silver leaf on cloth, Pichwai paintings depict the deity across the seasons and festivals of the Pushtimarg devotional calendar, combining fine detail with a scale meant to fill and frame the sanctum itself.
At the centre of the composition is a render of Sreenathji in his iconic Govardhandhari pose, with his left hand raised gracefully, in his gold garments. He is heavily ornamented in pearl and gemstone necklaces accompanied by flower and lotus garlands, gold and gemstone arm ornaments and earrings, nath (nosering) and a stylised headdress with peacock feathers and his hair is braided with gold ornaments. The diamonds on his nose and chin add to his beauty, as he holds his flute in his right hand along with a Kamal chadi. At his feet, are the ritualistic Bhog, Paan Beeda (Beetle leaves), Prasad Dibbi, and a Jal Patra (Water Pot). He stands beneath a Rajput-style scalloped archway, ornamented with a central floret and encircling leaf-work, supported by two round, tapering pillars.
Beside him are two gopis dressed in heavy gold garments and elaborate ornamentation as they hold offerings for Shrinathji. Their hands and feet are adorned with mehendi (stain patterns). Above the gopis and the archway are six golden cows with ornate jewellery and orange coloured head, hump and feet. The entire scene is framed in a gold border.
Flanking this frame are a herd of golden cows, mirroring each other. These cows are adorned with necklaces and orange humps, feet and heads of the cows reflect the festive temple traditions of Nathdwara, where the cows were adorned during daily rituals and celebrations.
The entire composition is placed on a pastel pink background with white polka dotted pattern within the first frame plain for the cows. Assembling this composition are the layered borders with two thin strips of silver encasing a pastel pink border with silver floral motifs followed by another terracotta-red border and the use of with pure silver leafing and pigments on cotton.
