About the Artwork +

This grand and meticulously detailed Pichwai painting by Naveen Soni is a quintessential example of the devotional art form originating from Nathdwara, Rajasthan. Pichwais are traditionally large cloth hangings used as backdrops for the deity in Shrinathji temples, designed to celebrate the various moods, seasons, and festivals of the divine. This composition is a dense, multi-layered visual hagiography, featuring a central iconic scene surrounded by twenty-eight individual vignettes that narrate different episodes of the Krishna Lila. The color palette is rich and festive, dominated by deep blues, vibrant reds, and earthy ochres, further elevated by the application of real gold leaf that provides a shimmering, celestial radiance to the sacred figures and ornamentation.

At the heart of the painting stands Shrinathji, a manifestation of the seven-year-old Krishna, depicted with deep indigo skin and large, lotus-shaped eyes. His iconography is defined by his raised left arm, a gesture signifying the lifting of Mount Govardhan to protect the people of Braj, while his right hand rests at his waist. He is adorned in a regal shringar (decoration) consisting of heavy pearl and gemstone necklaces, a patterned dhoti, and a crown topped with peacock feathers, all highlighted with genuine gold leaf. By his feet, a box of offering (prasad), a jaldani (water pot) and beeda (offerings of betel leaf) are kept as per tradition. Flanking the deity are eight Gopis in vibrant traditional attire, their hands raised in ecstatic devotion. Directly above this central group, lush trees are filled with playful monkeys, while the starry night sky features a whimsical human-faced moon and several celestial chariots carrying divine witnesses to the scene.

The lower section of the main canvas depicts the Govardhan Puja, a ritual where the mountain is worshipped with offerings of food to celebrate Krishna’s victory over the wrath of Indra. This area is populated by a majestic procession of white cows with decorative handprints on their flanks, alongside elegantly posed peacocks with sprawling, detailed tails. Encircling the entire work is a floral border that frames twenty-eight intricate panels. These panels chronicle the life of Krishna, including Radha and Krishna together, the dramatic moment of Vasudeva carrying baby Krishna across the flooding Yamuna while the multi-headed Sheshnaag provides a protective hood, scenes of the young deity herding cows in the pastures of Gokul, etc. This masterpiece by Naveen Soni is a visual prayer, capturing the vastness of the Krishna Lila through extraordinary craftsmanship and the opulent use of traditional gold-leaf techniques.

Naveen
Artist Naveen Soni hails from a family of traditional artists in Bhilwara, Rajasthan. He was trained from a young age by his grandfather, Shilp Guru Shri Badrilal Chitrakaar—a National Awardee in Miniature and Pichwai Art—and his father, Shri Sharad Soni. His natural talent was nurtured in a culturally rich environment, deeply rooted in traditional artistry. Naveen is a versatile artist who works in various classical styles such as Udaipur, Nathdwara, Bundi, Kishangarh, Kota, Kangra, Basholi, Pahari, Mughal, and Jain schools, as well as in contemporary forms. Naveen regards the traditional art of Pichwai painting as his cultural inheritance and strives to blend tradition with modernity. He has continued the unbroken legacy of creating richly hued Pichwai artworks on cloth and paper using natural stone pigments and gold leaf. His Pichwai paintings beautifully depict the intricate and ever-changing Shringar (adornments) of Lord Krishna, enriched with imaginative use of decorative elements, motifs, and accessories. Constantly exploring new artistic expressions, Naveen has also experimented by fusing contemporary and miniature styles to create aesthetically unique artworks. He has showcased his work in numerous exhibitions across India. The Naveen Soni Collection: This exclusive MeMeraki collection showcases Naveen Soni's remarkable talent and devotion, centering on the glorious life and leelas (divine plays) of Lord Krishna. Shrinathji's Divine Forms: The collection features several grand depictions of Shrinathji, the seven-year-old form of Krishna. From "The Serene Devotion" to "Divine Opulence" amidst a lotus grove and "Gopala Leela" with sacred cows, each painting captures the deity’s majestic poise and intimate connection with nature and his devotees. Celestial Narratives: Witness iconic moments from Krishna's life. "Gopashtami in Pichwai" beautifully celebrates the divine festival, while "The Divine Dance of Raas Leela" transports you to the mystical dance of Krishna and the Gopis under a starlit sky. "Eternal Bliss: Radha and Lord Krishna in Vrindavan" captures their timeless love in a serene pastoral setting. Spiritual Moments: Experience the deep spiritual reverence of "The Grand Godhuli Aarti," which depicts Krishna's divine homecoming at twilight. Other pieces like "Celestial Cows" and "Surrounded by Bhakti" highlight the profound bonds and festive devotion that define the Pichwai tradition.
