This striking painted work by Sindhe Siva depicts Hanuman, the devoted monkey deity of the Ramayana, rendered in the bold, richly ornamented visual language of the Tholu Bommalata shadow puppet tradition.
Tholu Bommalata, meaning "the dance of leather puppets" in Telugu, is a traditional shadow puppet art form from Andhra Pradesh with roots dating back to the 3rd century BCE. Historically used to narrate stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata through night-long performances, the art involves crafting translucent puppets from goat or deer leather, which are carved, perforated, and hand-painted with mineral colours before being brought to life behind an illuminated screen.
Hanuman is shown mid-motion, his body rendered in deep black and brown, one arm raised skyward while the other grips a sturdy mace (gada), his signature weapon. His long tail arcs dramatically up and over his head in a sweeping black line, framing the entire composition like a canopy. He stands balanced on one leg atop a narrow decorated pedestal, his pose full of coiled energy. His body is covered almost entirely in dense, repeating jewellery patterns, rows of small circular medallions, floral rosettes, and beaded strands rendered in red and white outline against the black of his form, extending from his crown down through his torso, waist, and legs. A vivid red garment wraps his waist, its folds patterned with fine floral detailing, while his face, rendered in warm ochre tones, carries the wide, rounded features characteristic of traditional Andhra puppet figures.
The entire scene is bordered by a bold red-and-white diagonal striped frame, echoing the decorative borders traditionally used to contain Tholu Bommalata compositions. The intricate, almost obsessively detailed ornamentation covering Hanuman's entire form is characteristic of the Tholu Bommalata style, where dense patterning was originally used to maximise the play of light and shadow when the leather puppet was held up to an illuminated screen during performance. Even translated here into a static painted composition, that same density of pattern gives the figure a glowing, luminous quality.
