This dynamic Tholu Bommalata artwork by Sindhe Siva portrays Kalki, the tenth and final avatar of Vishnu, prophesied to appear at the close of the Kali Yuga to end an age of darkness and restore dharma. Executed in the traditional idiom of Tholu Bommalata, the piece gives folk-art form to a figure who, unlike the other avatars, belongs not to the past but to a mythological future still awaited.
Tholu Bommalata, the "dance of leather puppets" is the centuries-old shadow puppet theatre of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, historically performed through the night by itinerant puppeteer families for village audiences, with the Ramayana and Mahabharata forming the backbone of its repertoire. Each puppet begins as goat, deer or buffalo hide, cleaned and treated until translucent, then hand-painted in bright natural pigments and perforated with fine dot-and-line work so that, held before a lit screen, the figure glows in luminous colour. Sindhe Siva works within this living tradition as part of the Nimmalakunta family of puppeteers in Anantapur district, an eighth-generation lineage recognised with National and State honours for its craftsmanship.
The figure of Kalki stands in profile, his skin painted in the warm orange tone used throughout the artist's Dashavatara series. His garments worked in a deep indigo-blue patterned with small white star-like motifs, layered over a flowing orange dhoti scattered with fine dotted detail, the whole composition trimmed with bands of gold, red and green elaborate ornamentation. A tall, elaborately tiered crown adorns the head, matched by large circular earrings, layered necklaces and heavy armlets rendered in gold-toned perforated pattern. In his lowered hand, Kalki grips a curved sword, held point-down in a poised, watchful stance that anticipates the destruction he is destined to bring upon the forces of adharma.
According to the Puranas, Kalki will be born at the end of the current cosmic age, when righteousness has all but vanished from the world, and will ride forth on a white horse, sword in hand, to vanquish the wicked and inaugurate a new Satya Yuga, an age of truth. As the only avatar yet to come, Kalki occupies a unique place in Vaishnava cosmology: a figure of prophecy and hope, embodying the promise that dharma, however eclipsed, is ultimately renewed. His sword is thus not merely a weapon but a symbol of decisive, world-ending justice.
In bringing this future avatar into the tactile, perforated language of leather and pigment, Sindhe Siva's Kalki closes the artist's Dashavatara sequence with the same care given to the avatars of the mythic past. The result is an artwork that honours both the technical rigour of Tholu Bommalata and the singular theological weight carried by this final, still-awaited incarnation of Vishnu.
