About the Artwork +

In this Pichwai painting by Dinesh Soni, Kamal Talai or Lotus Pond is depicted, featuring bright lotus flowers on a solid red background. The painting represents the Kalam Talai story of Lord Krishna enjoying the monsoons in a lotus pond, and the Kamal Talai motifs are reminiscent of the bank of the Yamuna river where Krishna is believed to have performed the divine love dance with the gopis, known as Raas Leela. The lotus symbolizes purity in Hindu mythology and complements well with the bright full moonlight in the background, representing the union of the Paramatama and the Jeevatama.

He inherited this cherished art form from his grandfather, the renowned Badrilal Chitrakar, and his father, the award-winning Prabhulal. With over three decades dedicated to painting and teaching Pichwai, Dinesh Soni is a true master.

Equipped with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from MDS University in Ajmer, Dinesh now serves as a full-time Pichwai artist in Bhilwara, Rajasthan. His unwavering mission, following 30 years of extensive research and practice in Pichwai Painting, is to preserve this ancient Indian style in its purest form and nurture future generations of artists.

Pichwai Art

The art of Pichwai originated over 400 years ago, illustrating tales of Shrinathji, an incarnation of Krishna, the deity manifest as a seven-year-old child. Prominent in th Nathadwara region of Rajasthan especially in the Vaishnavite sect, the paintings are hand-painted on cloth or paper and depict different scenes and stills - lotuses, Radha, Gopis and cows are also frequent subjects. What started as a religious practice, is an art today and finds place in the form of paintings and wall hangings in homes of many art connoisseurs.
