This luminous Tholu Bommalata artwork by Sindhe Siva portrays Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu and one of the most beloved deities of the Hindu pantheon, captured here in his pastoral form as Venugopala, the divine cowherd and flute player. Rendered through the traditional shadow puppetry of Andhra Pradesh, the piece translates one of Indian mythology's most tender and playful images into the bold, perforated language of leather craft.
Tholu Bommalata, the "dance of leather puppets", is the centuries-old shadow theatre of the Telugu-speaking Deccan, its origins traced to around the third century BCE and its repertoire built primarily on the Ramayana, with episodes from the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana, the principal scriptural source for Krishna's life, also finding a place on the puppeteer's screen. Each figure is cut from goat, deer or buffalo hide that has been cleaned, oiled and stretched over roughly two weeks until translucent, then hand-painted with natural dyes and finely perforated so that light passing through the screen renders every puppet as a glowing silhouette in colour. Sindhe Siva carries this craft forward as an eighth-generation puppeteer of the Nimmalakunta lineage in Anantapur district, a family recognised with National and State awards for their contribution to the art form.
Krishna is depicted here with his traditional blue-toned skin, standing in profile with both arms raised, shoulders parallel to the floor, to bring a flute to his lips, the instrument's slender form visible between his hands. He wears a rich yellow dhoti, the pitambara traditionally associated with Vishnu and his avatars, patterned with fine dotted and striped detailing and bordered in deep red and olive green. A tall, elaborately tiered crown adorns his head and a long garland of pearl-white beads loops down across his chest and shoulders in the layered strands characteristic of his iconography. Delicate jewellery, including floral earrings, armlets and anklets, complete the figure, rendered with the same fine gold-toned perforation seen throughout the artist's work.
Within the Bhagavata Purana and the broader devotional tradition, Krishna's flute-playing form as Venugopala represents the god at his most intimate and accessible: not the statesman-warrior of the Mahabharata's battlefield, but the cowherd of Vrindavan whose music is said to draw all creation, gopis, cattle and forest alike, into rapt devotion. The flute itself is understood as a symbol of the soul surrendered to the divine, hollow and empty of ego, through which Krishna's love flows freely into the world. This pastoral aspect of Krishna has inspired countless devotional traditions across India, from Bhakti poetry to classical dance.
In its combination of jewel-like colour, fine ornamentation and the melodious flute, this artwork captures the gentle, lyrical face of Vishnu's most celebrated avatar. Sindhe Siva's Krishna stands as a testament to how Tholu Bommalata, a tradition rooted in epic battle and grand narrative, is equally capable of rendering divinity's quieter, more melodic register.
