This elegant Tholu Bommalata artwork by Sindhe Siva depicts Lakshmana, the devoted younger brother of Rama and one of the Ramayana's most cherished figures, rendered through the traditional shadow puppetry of Andhra Pradesh. Where the epic's demons are given fangs and fury, Lakshmana is granted a calm, noble bearing befitting a prince whose defining trait is not martial rage but unwavering loyalty.
Tholu Bommalata, the "dance of leather puppets" is a shadow theatre tradition of the Telugu-speaking Deccan with a history reaching back some two thousand years, sustained by generations of itinerant puppeteer families and performed chiefly around episodes from the Ramayana. Each figure is cut from goat, deer or buffalo hide, cleaned and treated over roughly two weeks until translucent, then hand-painted with natural pigments and pierced with fine perforated detailing so that, held before a lit screen, the puppet glows in vivid colour. Sindhe Siva continues this craft as an eighth-generation puppeteer of the Nimmalakunta lineage in Dharmavaram, Anantapur district, a family honoured with National and State awards for their contribution to the tradition.
Lakshmana is shown here in profile with an orange-toned complexion, his garments in green and orange patterned with fine dotted and diamond motifs, the whole composition trimmed with gold-toned borders and a striped, fan-like flourish at the shoulder in keeping with the tradition's ornamental conventions. His crown rises in tiered layers of red and gold, matched by large circular earrings, a beaded necklace and heavy armlets and anklets rendered in the same fine perforation work seen throughout the artist's Dashavatara and Ramayana series. His expression is composed and dignified, conveying the godly nobility with which Lakshmana is traditionally associated. True to his character as protector, he is shown drawing his bow, an arrow nocked and ready, his stance poised and alert.
In the Ramayana, Lakshmana accompanies Rama and Sita into fourteen years of forest exile entirely of his own will, forgoing the comforts of the palace to serve and protect his elder brother. His devotion is tested repeatedly, most famously in the episode of the Lakshmana Rekha, the protective boundary he draws around the hermitage before departing to search for Rama, lured away by Maricha's cry for help. Lakshmana is revered as the embodiment of bhratru dharma, the duty and love owed between brothers, as well as of selfless service, and in many devotional traditions he is understood as an incarnation of Shesha, the cosmic serpent upon whom Vishnu reclines.
Through its restrained palette, dignified pose and archer's stance, this artwork captures Lakshmana's essential character: steadfast, vigilant and utterly devoted. Sindhe Siva's rendering affirms Tholu Bommalata's ability to convey not only the epic's spectacle of gods and demons but also its quieter, deeply human ideals of loyalty and duty.
