This regal Tholu Bommalata artwork by Sindhe Siva depicts Lakshmana, the devoted younger brother of Rama, rendered through the traditional shadow puppetry of Andhra Pradesh in a form that embodies steadfast loyalty and noble heroism. As Rama’s inseparable companion and selfless protector throughout his trials, Lakshmana occupies a central place of reverence and dramatic importance within the artform’s traditional repertoire.
Tholu Bommalata, the "dance of leather puppets" is a shadow theatre tradition of the Telugu-speaking Deccan with a history reaching back some two thousand years. Its performances are historically drawn from a Telugu version of the Ramayana compiled for the shadow stage, alongside episodes from the Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana. Puppets are cut from goat, deer or buffalo hide, cleaned and treated over roughly two weeks until translucent, then hand-painted with natural dyes and finely perforated so that, held before a lit screen, each figure glows as a vivid, coloured shadow.
Lakshmana is depicted with a warm, peach-toned complexion, his posture vigilant and resolute. He wears a dark blue kurta patterned with white dotted squares, accented by a bright coral shawl draped across his shoulder. He is draped in a vibrant yellow dhoti decorated with an orange-red border, leading down to distinctive black jutis with white star-like dots.
His head is adorned with an elaborate multi-tiered crown of red, gold and white, complemented by large circular ear ornaments, layered necklaces and shoulder medallions that glint with fine perforations. In his right hand, Lakshmana holds a sharp, barbed arrow aimed downwards, while his left hand firmly grasps his bow slung across his shoulder, complete with a quiver of arrows, a testament to his constant readiness to defend his brother and uphold dharma.
As the constant companion to Rama around whom so many of the epic's intense martial conflicts unfold, this artwork captures Lakshmana with the noble dignity and resolute spirit his character demands. Sindhe Siva's rendering brings together the full expressive range of the tradition, its brilliant pigments, meticulous perforation work and dynamic iconographic styling.
