About the Artwork +

Sikki grass art, a vibrant tradition from Bihar, highlights the skillful artistry of women who craft intricate objects from the naturally golden Sikki grass. These creations, ranging from decorative pieces to practical containers, embody the cultural heritage of the region, reflecting local themes and the inherent beauty of natural materials. This striking Sikki grass artwork by Dhirendra Kumar is a graceful and symbolic portrayal of Lord Ganesha, crafted with exceptional intricacy using the traditional golden-hued Sikki grass native to Bihar. Set against a deep black background, the radiant golden fibers form a minimalist yet expressive depiction of Ganesha’s iconic features—his curved trunk, large ears, and serene eye—each rendered with flowing lines that speak to both elegance and divine energy. The crown-like arch above his head, adorned with lotus petal motifs, adds a regal aura, emphasizing Ganesha’s status as the remover of obstacles and the lord of beginnings. What makes this piece especially captivating is its stylized form; the use of negative space is both deliberate and artistic, allowing each Sikki strand to breathe while contributing to the overall composition. Delicate floral motifs and flowing elements surround Ganesha, symbolizing purity and spiritual growth, while the presence of his loyal mouse companion in the lower corner adds a charming narrative detail, grounding the divine figure in traditional lore. The fine textural work, created entirely with painstakingly coiled and flattened strips of Sikki grass, showcases Dhirendra Kumar’s mastery and the meditative discipline required for such craftsmanship. More than just a decorative piece, this artwork stands as a spiritual icon, a cultural emblem, and a testament to the enduring beauty of India’s folk traditions. It beautifully marries simplicity with depth, reflecting both reverence for the divine and respect for the natural, sustainable materials used to honor it.
