This Pichwai painting by the master artist Dinesh Soni depicts the manifestation of Lord Shrinathji, a form of Young Krishna, seven years old, who lifts Mount Govardhana with his little finger to save the lives of his Brajwasi.
Pichwai artwork is a traditional art form that prevails in the Nathdwara region of Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat. This artwork is done on cloth, which is further utilised to hang on the back of the walls and worship his form as the one who protects the universe with his charming acts.
Rendered in the landscape orientation, he is staged at the centre under a marble architectural sanctum. Standing in a sampada position, raising his left hand, symbolising his act of lifting Mount Govardhana, while his right hand holds a kamalchadi (lotus bud) and a murali (flute). The deity’s facial expression is placid and calm, with kamalnayan (lotus-shaped eyes), a broad nose with a pearl nath (nose-ring), fuller lips and a diamond on the chin. He wears a gold-ornate crown with a peacock feather (morpankh) at the top and attires with a garment dyed with primary colours like red, green and yellow. He is adorned with lots of ornaments, including pearl strings, gold chains, stone-studded jewellery pieces and a lotus garland. His braid is flowing rhythmically with a tassel attached to it at the end. By his feet lie the offerings of jaldani (water pot), prasad dibbi, paan beeda and a footrest.
Surrounding his manifestation, the group of ladies is depicted in distinct positions. They are attired in colourful clothing and ornaments. On their forehead, they have applied the Vaishnava tilak and a mahavar to their hands and feet, symbolising their marital status.
The sky is painted in deep blue colour with a white polka-dot rendition. The sky is occupied by the celestial beings, mounted on their vahana (animal-vehicle); these are Lord Brahma, Lord Indra, Lord Shiva, and Lord Kartikeya, with their consorts, respectively. The lords are showering flower petals on the Shrinathji manifestation, witnessing his divine presence on the earth. To their center, the face of the moon (chandra) is depicted. Besides the figural representation, the atmosphere is filled with lush vegetation of banana, mango trees and other flowering trees. The foreground is occupied by the presence of animals like peacocks, swans and other birds, symbolising prosperity. The rendition of the blooming lotuses under a pond is depicted naturalistically, with several fish swimming in it. The frame is enclosed with a broad border of mustard yellow backdrop, depicting the cows (Kamdhenu: wish-fulfilling cows) in horizontal and vertical lines and a peacock at the centre. This border is further enclosed with another thinner border of flower motifs.
