About the Artwork +
This collection of miniature paintings by Shehzaad Ali Sherani is a refined exploration of botanical geometry, focusing on the sacred lotus motif through the meticulous lens of classical Indian miniature traditions. By isolating the flower from broader narrative scenes, the artist emphasizes the rhythmic complexity of nature, transforming each bloom into a self-contained universe of form and light. The series is defined by its precision, where every petal is treated with individual reverence, contributing to a collective sense of organic expansion.
The defining characteristic of these works is the masterful integration of 22k gold leafing, which serves both as a celestial backdrop and a structural highlight. The gold acts as a luminous stage, allowing the delicate shades of violet and pink to vibrate with greater intensity. This use of precious metal elevates the paintings beyond simple floral studies, imbuing them with a sense of timelessness and divinity. The reflective quality of the gold ensures that the appearance of the work shifts with the light, mimicking the natural movement of a pond’s surface at different times of day.
The artist employs a sophisticated shading technique using fine, hair-like strokes to create soft gradients across the petals. This creates a striking three-dimensional effect, making the flowers appear as if they are gently unfolding from the paper. The compositions alternate between radial mandalas, where the petals spiral outward from a golden core, and upward-reaching arrangements that suggest the growth of a Tree of Life. This variation in structure highlights the artist’s ability to find infinite diversity within a single, focused subject.
In this set, Sherani bridges the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetic sensibilities. The clean lines and disciplined color palette provide a contemporary feel, while the materials and techniques remain rooted in centuries-old heritage. When viewed as a set, these miniatures form a visual tapestry of light and shadow, celebrating the lotus not just as a symbol, but as a masterpiece of natural design.
These artworks are made with 22k gold leafing.
