About the Artwork +
This exuberant painting, crafted by the talented artist Shehzaad Ali Sherani, features a stunning representation of lush vegetation that dominates the canvas.
The painting is rendered in the traditional pichwai style, a celebrated form of artwork originating from Rajasthan, with its roots deeply entrenched in the Nathdwara region. The term ‘pichwai’ refers to intricate paintings executed on cloth, which are traditionally hung on the back walls of temples. These beautifully detailed textiles serve a sacred purpose, created to adorn and worship Lord Shrinathji, a seven-year old child incarnation of Lord Krishna depicted as a child.
The artwork here is filled with lush vegetation and various species of trees. The artist has attempted to depict the vibrant scene of forest life and nature. Various species like Mango, Banana, Kadamb are present here. The shades of green are prominently used to segregate the trees, which indicates that the artist has a strong knowledge of the botany of trees. Alongside the trees, depictions of animals are also present, such as monkeys, birds, peacocks and cows, showcasing the rich flora and fauna. The environment and nature are amalgamating here on the canvas. The representations are rendered with life, movement and zest. The contours and lines are crafted with meticulous detailing and the anatomy of the birds and animals is precisely depicted.
The painting is divided into three levels. The upper level features a sky filled with swirling clouds, giving a sense of movement and windy air. The sky is painted with brushstrokes of yellow and orange, creating a beautiful delineation of dusk. This brushstroke style of painting the sky is reminiscent of the Kishangarh style. Beneath it, lush vegetation, various flowers, grasses and shrubs are visible in the mid-level. The shades of green beautifully adorn the canvas. Meanwhile, the foreground showcases smaller dunes where animals are resting, like peacocks and peahens, along with cows, which are painted in miniature form. The cows have saffron handprints on their bodies, symbolising the presence and protection of Krishna, highlighting his role as the Gopala or protector of cows.
In front of the animals, a pond is painted in a still horizontal position, with blooming lotuses and fish living in it. The lotuses and their subsequent leaves are painted with delicacy and finesse. This entire representation reflects a wholesome balance of the artist's imagination on the canvas. Continuous lines and balance are core compositional elements used by the artist, complemented by a vivid colour palette.
