This captivating Kalighat painting by Anwar Chitrakar explores the classic Kalighat motif of the ""Babu and Bibi, a popular theme originating in 19th-century Kolkata used to depict, and often satirize, the opulent, highly westernized lifestyles of the Bengali elite.
Kalighat Painting is a traditional folk art form from Kolkata, West Bengal, known for its bold brushstrokes, expressive figures, and minimalistic compositions. It is characterized by strong flowing outlines, vibrant colours and themes ranging from Hindu mythology to social satire and scenes of everyday urban life.
The composition is centered around the musical intimacy of the Babu and Bibi, who are seated together at an instrument. The Bibi sits in the foreground, angled slightly to the left, wearing a brilliant pink sari defined by bold, sweeping folds, a crisp white scalloped edge and a golden border. She is heavily adorned with multiple layered pearl necklaces, earrings and bangles. Her face features the classic Kalighat almond eyes and a calm, enigmatic expression.
Seated closely behind her, the Babu leans in affectionately. He wears a tailored black European-style tunic over a draped dhoti. He sports a prominent mustache and his hair is neatly combed back. His right arm reaches intimately around the Bibi's shoulder to gently caress her neck and chin, while his left hand rests casually on the edge of the instrument.
The couple is engaged in making music on a highly stylized, hybrid musical instrument resting on a four-legged teal table. The instrument features a small keyboard on the left, but sweeps dramatically to the right into a massive, fan-like acoustic structure detailed with intricate olive-gold radiating lines and scalloped edges.
The scene is firmly placed in a wealthy, colonial-era interior. To the right of the couple stands an elegant, Western-style lamp with a white glass shade and a decorative black iron stand. Further emphasizing their westernized status, both figures wear black, closed-toe European-style shoes, with Bibi's feet playfully crossed beneath the table, revealing delicate silver anklets.
The artwork is brilliantly framed by architectural and theatrical elements. The base of the composition is anchored by a patterned floor featuring geometric tiles with yellow starburst motifs, creating an indoor perspective. Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
