This dramatic Tholu Bommalata artwork by Sindhe Siva portrays Narasimha, the fourth avatar of Vishnu, whose half-man, half-lion form embodies one of Hindu mythology's most striking acts of divine intervention. Rendered through the traditional shadow puppetry of Andhra Pradesh, the piece gives vivid, glowing form to a deity whose very body defies ordinary boundaries of kind.
Tholu Bommalata, the "dance of leather puppets" is the centuries-old shadow theatre tradition of the Telugu-speaking Deccan, historically performed through the night by itinerant puppeteer families, with the ten avatars of Vishnu, drawn from the Bhagavata Purana, forming a beloved part of its repertoire alongside the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Each puppet begins as goat, deer or buffalo hide, cleaned and treated until translucent, then hand-painted with natural pigments and finely perforated so that light passing through the performance screen transforms the figure into a luminous, jewel-toned shadow. Sindhe Siva continues this craft as an eighth-generation puppeteer of the Nimmalakunta lineage in Dharmavaram, Anantapur district, a family honoured with National and State awards for their contribution to the art form.
Narasimha is rendered here with an orange-toned body, his garments worked in bands of orange and blue patterned with fine dotted detailing and trimmed with gold borders in the manner seen across the artist's Dashavatara series. His most distinctive feature is his lion head, framed by a thick, radiating golden mane picked out in fine individual strands, with a fierce, snarling muzzle, bared teeth and wide, alert eyes replacing the calm human faces of the other avatars. He wears a royal crown, echoed by ornamented armlets, anklets and a beaded necklace across his otherwise humanoid torso and limbs. True to his iconography, Narasimha holds no weapon; his hands are instead shown bare, fingers extended into sharp claws, the very instrument of his mythic victory.
According to the Puranas, the demon king Hiranyakashipu had won a boon rendering him near-invincible: he could not be killed by man or beast, indoors or outdoors, by day or night, on the ground or in the sky, nor by any weapon. To protect his devoted son Prahlada from his father's tyranny and cruelty, Vishnu assumed the form of Narasimha, neither fully man nor fully beast, and slew Hiranyakashipu at twilight, on the threshold of a doorway, upon his own lap, using only his claws, honouring the precise letter of the boon while shattering its intent entirely. Narasimha is thus revered as the protector of devotees against tyranny, and as proof that divine justice finds its way around even the most carefully worded arrogance.
With its snarling mane, bare claws and fusion of human and animal form, this artwork captures the raw, elemental force of Narasimha's myth. Sindhe Siva's rendering shows how Tholu Bommalata's bold colour and dense perforation can lend even a hybrid, half-animal deity the same commanding presence given to the tradition's fully human gods and heroes.
