About the Artwork +

Mata Ni Pachedi: Revered folk art by Gujarat's nomadic Vaghri community. These traditional cloth paintings from the Sabarmati river banks center on a Hindu goddess, embodying shakti (power), within a temple motif. This exquisite Mata ni Pachedi by master artist Bhanu Bhai Chittara is a striking piece from his Navaratri series, a sacred visual narrative steeped in devotion, mythology, and community ritual. it celebrates the divine feminine through the powerful iconography of Maa Durga in her many manifestations. At its heart is the central image of the Goddess astride her lion, surrounded by a radiant halo of devotees, celestial beings, and symbolic creatures, all meticulously rendered using traditional kalam (pen) techniques on hand-treated cloth. Around her are four circular vignettes—each featuring Maa in distinct forms and on different vahanas (mounts): the black goat representing Meladi Mata, the rooster representing Bahuchar Mata, the goose represnting Brahmani Mata, and the Elephant representing Solanki Mata—each symbolic of strength, courage, benovalence, indomitable power. The space between these deities pulses with the life of the community—miniature depictions of rituals, dancers, musicians, and celebrants—all hand-drawn with natural pigments in a riot of reds, ochres, indigo blues, and blacks, characteristic of the Vaghari community’s sacred art form. Framed with a rhythmic geometric border and grounded in a field of intricate blue floral and animal motifs, this textile is more than an artwork—it is a mobile temple, traditionally used by nomadic and marginalized groups who were denied access to institutional shrines. During Navaratri, this cloth transforms into a space of worship, storytelling, and collective memory. Bhanu Bhai’s work continues this legacy with reverence and contemporary finesse, ensuring that Mata ni Pachedi remains a living, breathing embodiment of Gujarat’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
