About the Artwork +
In this magnificient Mata ni Pachedi by master artist Bhanu Bhai Chittara, the sacred narrative of Vishat Mata unfolds like a divine scroll of devotion, courage, and cosmic justice. Originating from Gujarat, this artform is a testament to the artistic legacy and resilience of the Vaghri community. This art form started off as a means of worship, for the Vaghris who were denied access to temples. Thus, they painted their own temples on cloth, as represented in this artwork. At the center of this composition is the regional goddess, Vishat Mata, sitting inside a temple, its ornate shikhara rising with a flag on top, the arches decorated with intricate patterns and motifs. The goddess is seated on a black buffalo, with her ten arms holding celestial weapons like the sword, trident, spear, etc., with embellished robes, ornamentation and a crown, in a side profile. Set against a bright red backdrop, the detailed black and white images in the panels tell a story - of the legend of Visat Mata. The story begins in a dried lake, where a helpless buffalo sinks into the mud, symbolizing earthly suffering. Despite warnings and divine restraint, Parvati chooses empathy over fate, merging her essence with the buffalo to birth a sacred presence upon the Earth. From this act of boundless compassion arises Vishat Mata, a powerful embodiment of Adhyashakti, the primordial feminine force. The artist's masterful brushwork and sacred iconography capture the drama of gods and demons, the emergence of a divine warrior child, and the eventual vanquishing of the asura Amariya Hetal. Every panel is a testament to faith and the protective power of the goddess. Each motif, whether the radiating sun, the charging bull Nandi, or the fierce trident-wielding goddess, speaks of protection, sacrifice, and transformation. With twenty crore goddesses said to reside within her, Vishat Mata reigns in this Pachedi not just as a deity, but as a living legacy of shakti - the sacred feminine. This artwork is meant to be much more than a visual treat, it is a symbol of devotion, strength and culture, it is a portable temple, meant to spread the regional traditions of the Vaghris, a means to tell their stories.
