This majestic Tholu Bommalata artwork by Sindhe Siva depicts Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu and the fierce warrior-sage whose axe became synonymous with the restoration of dharma through righteous, if terrible, retribution. Rendered through the traditional shadow puppetry of Andhra Pradesh, the piece captures the barely contained fury for which this avatar is best remembered.
Tholu Bommalata, meaning "the dance of leather puppets'' is the age-old shadow theatre tradition of the Telugu-speaking Deccan, its repertoire drawn chiefly from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana, the last of which recounts the deeds of Vishnu's ten avatars, including Parashurama's. Each puppet is cut from treated, translucent animal hide, hand-painted with natural pigments, and finely perforated so that light from behind the screen renders every figure as a glowing, coloured shadow. Sindhe Siva practises this craft within the Nimmalakunta lineage of Dharmavaram, Anantapur district, an eighth-generation family of National and State award-winning leather puppeteers.
Parashurama is rendered here with an orange-toned complexion, his garments combining red, orange and green in fine dotted and striped patterning, trimmed throughout with bands of gold ornamentation in the manner typical of the artist's Dashavatara series. His crown rises in dense, tiered layers, matched by large circular earrings, a heavy beaded necklace and richly worked armlets and anklets. Parashurama's face here is marked by a visibly angry expression, with sharply drawn brows and an intent, forward stare that conveys the barely restrained wrath central to his character. Over his shoulder, he bears his defining attribute: the parashu, a great battle-axe, its blade raised and ready, the weapon from which his very name, meaning "Rama with an axe" is derived.
According to Puranic tradition, Parashurama was born a Brahmin sage but was gifted his axe by Shiva after a period of severe penance, becoming a peerless warrior. When the tyrannical kshatriya king Kartavirya Arjuna's sons murdered his father, the sage Jamadagni, Parashurama took up arms in retribution, and is said to have rid the earth of oppressive kshatriya rulers twenty-one times over in the campaigns that followed, restoring rule to the righteous. He is considered a chiranjivi, one of the immortals said to remain alive across ages, and appears again in later Vaishnava lore, notably in the Ramayana, where he tests Rama's own strength and divinity. Parashurama thus represents dharma enforced not through gentle restraint but through decisive, righteous violence against entrenched injustice.
Through its angry expression and raised axe, this artwork conveys the singular ferocity that sets Parashurama apart from Vishnu's gentler incarnations. Sindhe Siva's rendering affirms Tholu Bommalata's range as a storytelling medium, equally capable of the serene and the wrathful within a single, consistent visual language of colour and perforated leather.
